We would recommend that rather than using KICA as your categories in Markbook, you use the STRANDS as your categories.
(**Please remember - You need to be able to explain how each"task" a student completes "fits" into KICA, but you do not need to track KICA.)
The strands are all weighted equally at 25% each.
Then, in Markbook there would be only 15 "assignments/entries". These assignments/entries would be the OVERALL EXPECTATIONS under each of the 4 Strand categories:
Listening to Understand
Speaking to Communicate
Reflecting on Skills and Strategies (Oral)
Reading for Meaning
Understanding Form and Style
Reading with Fluency
Reflecting on Skills and Strategies (Reading and Literature Studies)
Developing and Organizing Content
Using Knowledge of Form and Style
Applying Knowledge of Conventions
Reflecting on Skills and Strategies (Writing)
Understanding Media Texts
Understanding Media Forms, Conventions and Techniques
Creating Media Texts
Reflecting on Skills and Strategies (Media Studies)
You will notice in the example below that each of the overall expectations for the Oral strand are all entered as "Out of = 4 (for level 1, 2, 3 4) and weighted as 1 (they are all equal). You would do the same with all the expectations for each strand.
Then, as students complete work, teachers can track student progress using the tracking templates (shared on our Tracking of Student Learning page). The marks that go into Markbook would be reflective of students' progress over time (most recent, most consistent) as they attempt each of those OVERALL EXPECTATIONS through multiple assignments/activities, etc.
You will notice in the examples, that all the dates are Sept 14, as these Overall Expectations would be entered at the beginning of the semester/quadmester and then teachers will simply adjust a student's mark as they make progress in their learning in each specific expectation.
This especially makes sense during a shortened quadmester schedule so that students aren't penalized if they miss a day/assignments for illness, as they will be able to demonstrate their mastery of that Overall Expectation in other assignments over the length of the course.
