  1. The Royal Canadian Mint is created in Ottawa, Ontario. Coins are now made in Canada for the first time instead of England (1908)


  1. Anne of Green Gables is written by Lucy Maud Montgomery. The tale of this adventurous girl from PEI becomes a part of Canadian pop culture (June 1908)


  1. The Royal Canadian Navy is established (1910)


  1. McGill University opens its doors to Canada’s first female professor Carrie Derrick (1912)


  1. World War 1 begins in Europe. Britain declares war on Germany bringing Canada automatically into WWI (1914)
