Changing British Attitudes

North America had been a source of riches for Britain for more than 200 years. To keep control of the land and its valuable fur, fish, and timber resources, Britain had fought many lengthy and costly battles.

By the 1860s, British authorities indicated a growing desire to have colonies, such as those in North America, assume a greater financial responsibility for their own defence in order to reduce the burden on British taxpayers.

Many British officials welcomed the idea of Confederation so the colonies could be be more independent and not require money for military support.

Britain also believed its own relationship with the United States might improve if British North America was more independent.
