New this week:
This week we will be preparing our outdoor gardens and container gardens to transplant our seedlings.
Click on the link below to share pictures of your gardening and growing adventures.
Containers - plastic, with drainage holes, large enough for your plants at mature size.
Potting mix soil is best - holds water.
Fertilizer - plant food.
PLANTS :)
For a 12 inch container, mix potting soil and 4-6 tbsp of fertilizer.
Add the fertilizer and mix until blended. DO NOT fill entire container with soil to the top.
Place plant on top, add more soil and fertilizer (premixed) around the plant.
Fill with soil, pack down around plant, layer again with soil.
Tomato plants will need a larger pot (16 inches across the top).
Larger containers will need some more fertilizer. Add support sticks as plants grow larger.
Process can be repeated for variety of plants.
Make sure to adjust amount of fertilizer added depending on container size.
Wet cardboard
Compost
Mulch
PLANTS :)
Remove staples and tape from your cardboard, lay down flat where you plan to grow.
Cover the gaps between your cardboard pieces. Wet cardboard works best.
Add your compost- about 10cm deep. Leave edges of cardboard exposed.
Add about 4cm of mulch on top of the compost. Leave cardboard edges exposed.
Add extra layers of cardboard around the boarder of your garden bed. You are ready to plant.
*Roots will grow through the cardboard and reach the soil underneath.
*Worms LOVE the cardboard!
