The future is now! The world of work is still changing and so is cooperative education! We are happy to announce that once again, we will have the opportunity to offer our Summer Cooperative Education Program as a two-credit, on-line course with the opportunity for on-site placements in areas where placements are available.
Students will be expected to participate on-line during the following dates:
ORIENTATION: Saturday May 13, 2023
Saturdays: May 20, May 27, June 3, June 10, June 17, and June 24, 2023
Monday to Friday: July 4 to July 28, 2023
As part of this virtual learning experience, we will be including a variety of community partners as Virtual Coop Mentors and Guest Speakers. These individuals are referred to as our VIPs (Virtual Information Partners) and will share their experience and expertise through online conversation meetings with our students that are assigned to an on-line mentor. This format was very well received by students and mentors during our previous summers as part of our online approach to experiential learning. On-site placement possibilities will also be explored in career related areas where placements are available. On-site placements will take place during the month of July. On-line requirements will be reviewed and adjusted as needed for students with on-site placements.
All coop students will also be exploring information related to their career choices and SHSM areas of focus through the Brightspace platform. Each student’s on-line course experience may be different as it reflects the innovative possibilities that are associated with their area of interest. Therefore, all participants will be responsible for having access to the internet and a reliable computer device.
Students are required to log on every day for approximately 4 - 6 hours. This time may vary as it takes into consideration that the commitment to on-line learning will also involve flexibility combined with times to attend on-line that are mandatory. Students with on-site placements during the month of July will have individual schedules that reflect the availability of their placement.
The on-line application form will be available on the TVDSB website from March 23 to May 3, 2023. We recommend that all students discuss this possibility with their guidance counselor prior to submitting an application. Please note that on-site placements cannot be guaranteed for all students. All requests for a workplace related experience with a mentor at an on-site placement or an on-line mentor will be considered and reviewed in collaboration with their coop teacher.
We are very excited to be delivering our cooperative education program through an on-line format while also including opportunities for on-site and/or on-line mentors, in order to meet the needs of our students, while also adhering to health and safety guidelines. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to enhance employability skills, while engaging in meaningful experiences to help prepare them in accomplishing future goals. Each student’s experience will have unique components that reflect their career interests, as well as relevant approaches that have become a part of the changing workplace.
