This is an opportunity for students to begin their apprenticeship while remaining in Secondary School, through the Co-operative Education program. Please see your Guidance counsellor, or Co-op teacher for more information.
Student Criteria:
• Students must be in Grade 12 or in their fifth year and working towards their OSSD. As was indicated in last year’s application guide, students with an OSSD were not guaranteed to be eligible. This year, students who have achieved their OSSD are only eligible to participate in exceptional circumstances as dictated by SCWI. Next year (2025-2026), students who have achieved their OSSD will not be eligible to apply.
• Students must have 26 credits with all compulsory credits achieved by the start of semester two.
• Students should be scheduled in Co-op for Semester Two (February 2025) and be at a placement that is able and willing to sponsor them as an apprentice in their selected trade. Students will be at the college full days and will not be able to attend classes at their home school from April to June.
• Students must be responsible and have strong independent study skills. The programs are college courses and they have a heavy workload. The Accelerated OYAP Level 1 is the first schooling block of an apprenticeship. For the students who prefer hands-on learning, they need to know that this is the first block of in-class training for their trade. If they would like to have more on-the-job experience before attempting the in-class training, they should consider staying at their coop placement as an apprentice and getting more skills signed off in their training standards logbook and completing the Level 1 training later in their apprenticeship. One apprenticeship pathway is not better than the other and both lead to the same goal of becoming a licensed journeyperson.
• Strong math skills are required. Electricians would benefit from having completed a Senior Physics course. Auto Service Technicians would benefit from having completed an electrical course. Experience in the trade through coop or employment is beneficial for student success.
•Students are required to attend all classes. Students who are not able to attend every day should not apply to the program. Attendance aligns with the number of hours required by the MLITSD. Students who miss classes will not be eligible to earn their Level 1.
• Students must have a social insurance number.
• Parent/Guardian signatures are mandatory for students under 18 years of age.
