Co-operative education at Lord Dorchester provides an exciting opportunity to experience a real-world work environment while developing knowledge and skills in an area of interest. Co-operative education is offered in all subject areas and is open to all Grade 11 and 12 students* as a two or four credit program. Students seeking an apprenticeship can register with the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) to earn hours and skills towards their apprenticeship. *subject to age restrictions as found in the Employment Standards Act
1 Level 1 Apprenticeship Training is available for qualified students. Please see a co-operative education teacher or guidance counsellor for qualifying criteria.
Student co-operative education placements are finalized during the pre-employment period of the course which occurs in the first two weeks of the semester. Students work at their placements over a 16-17-week period. As a result of the amount of time invested and level of commitment required by the student, successful completion of this course will result in the student earning two (half day)or four (full day)credits.
Students interested in participating in this exciting course opportunity will start the process when they complete their course registration for next year.
To enroll in your Co-operative education, course experience:
• Students who want a two credit only co-operative education should choose “DCO3OA” during course selection
• Students who want four credit co-operative education should choose both “DCO3OA” and “DCO3OB” during course selection
• OYAP – All students, 2 and 4 credit, participating in an apprenticeable trade can be registered as an OYAP student
• Following the course registration, all students enrolled in co-operative education will be contacted to complete an application form and set up a personal interview with a co-operative education teacher
• The application and interview are to confirm that the student has the level of commitment required to be successful
