Super Bowl Commercials

Doritos and Mountain Dew

During Super Bowl 52, Doritos and Mountain Dew released a new commercial advertising the new Doritos Blaze and Mountain Dew Ice. The commercial was a musical standoff between actors Peter Dinklage and Morgan Freeman, Peter Dinklage representing Doritos Blaze and Morgan Freeman representing Mountain Dew Ice. The commercial uses ethos by featuring famous actors Peter Dinklage and Morgan Freeman to influence the viewers. The commercial uses pathos by incorporating fire vs ice, which is a Game of Thrones reference, this is backed up by the fact that Peter Dinklage is part of the G.O.T. cast. Viewers who are fans of Game of Thrones and understand the symbolism behind the commercial will be influenced to purchase the products. The commercial uses logos by saying that Doritos Blaze are spicy and Mountain Dew Ice is refreshing and will cool you off. This would appeal to anyone who is interested in these affects. I think the overall method of persuasion is pathos. Like many other commercials by Doritos and Mountain Dew this advertisement was intriguing, influencing and outrageously comical.

Jeep

During the 2018 NFL championship, Super Bowl 52, a commercial advertising the 2018 Jeep Wrangler was aired during a commercial break. In the commercial Jeff Goldblum is driving a 2018 Jeep Wrangler to escape a Tyrannosaurus Rex, this is a throwback to Jurassic Park, this is proven when they show a clip from the original movie. The commercial uses logos by using actor Jeff Goldblum to reenact a scene from the film Jurassic Park, Goldblum had started in this movie. The commercial uses logos when it show the 2018 Jeep Wrangler easily manoeuvring through uneven missing terrain, this show that the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is off-road, powerful and handles well. The commercials primary appeal was ethos, the advertisement’s throwback to Jurassic Park will attract many of the movies fans, this is backed up by Jeep’s slogan, “Evolution in Its Purest Form,” which I believe to be a shout out to the Jurassic theme of the commercial.

Wendy’s

During the 2018 NFL Super Bowl, a commercial advertising Wendy’s hamburgers was aired. The commercial claims that Wendy’s fresh, never frozen hamburgers are better that McDonald’s flash frozen hamburgers. The commercial explains how McDonald’s freezes their burgers to “seal in flavour,” but they make their burgers fresh when you order, as claimed in their slogan, “We only use fresh, never frozen beef on every hamburger everyday so they’re hot, juicy and made when you order.” By using images of the products and using logical reasoning (logos) the commercial does a good job at persuading viewers to buy Wendy’s hamburgers. If there was one thing that they could have added, I think they should have used a celebrity to advertise their products to use ethos to strengthen their claims.
