Why Do We Need Sustainability?

Sustainability - making choices that do not damage or use up resources for the future.

1948, the United Nations published a document outlining 30 human rights for all people. They include:

  • the right to live in freedom and safety
  • the right to food
  • clothing
  • housing
  • medical care
  • education

Smart Growth Principles

Around the world, many rural and urban communities are using smart growth principles to help create sustainable settlements. The goal of smart growth is to preserve the environment, improve life for everyone, and grow the economy responsibly. The image below shows how smart growth principles can be applied to settlements.

ACTIVITY: design your own smart growth community.

  • start by listing features of your community that make it "smart"
  • include features such as residential areas, roads and paths, schools, hospitals, stores, libraries, and parks
