SOLAR RENEWABLE ENERGY CREDITS
1 SREC = 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) (1,000 kWh) of electricity generated by a solar system.
SRECs are separate from the electricity itself.
You use or sell the electricity.
You sell the environmental benefit as an SREC.
SREC BASICS
Many U.S. states have Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) that require utilities to get a certain percentage of their electricity from renewable sources—often with a specific solar carve-out.
Utilities can comply by:
Producing solar energy themselves, or
Buying SRECs from solar system owners.
If you own a qualifying solar system:
Your system’s production is tracked (via a meter or monitoring software).
Every time you generate 1 MWh, you earn 1 SREC.
You sell SRECs to utilities or through an SREC marketplace.
Prices vary widely by state and market conditions.
👉 Important: SREC income is in addition to savings from net metering or reduced electric bills.
It depends on the state:
High-value SREC markets: New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Washington D.C.
Low or no SREC markets: Many states don’t offer them at all.
Prices can range from:
~$5–$20 per SREC (low-demand markets)
$200–$450+ per SREC (tight, high-demand markets)
SREC prices fluctuate like a commodity.
Typically:
Grid-connected solar PV systems
Registered with the state’s SREC program
Meet size and certification requirements
Both residential and commercial systems may qualify, depending on the state.
Most states allow SREC eligibility for 10–15 years after system commissioning.
Some newer programs are transitioning away from SRECs to fixed incentives (like SMART in MA or TRECs/RECs with contracts).
REC (Renewable Energy Certificate): Generic renewable energy (wind, hydro, solar).
SREC: A solar-specific REC, usually worth much more due to policy demand.
