IB and French

Sydney Academy students can take an Integrated French Certificate (Certificate en français intégré) over three years (grades 10-12). Students will take the following 6 courses to receive the certificate at the end of grade 12 (students following this option will sit for the IB French examination at the end of grade 12) :

Certificate en français intégré:

Grade 10:

      • SA Pre-IB French 10 Art dramatique 11

Grade 11:

      • IB French 11 Mode de vie actif 11

Grade 12:

      • IB French 12 Géographie planétaire 12


IB Diploma Students may also take the Integrated French Certificate concurrently by taking the following courses:

IB Diploma and Certificate en français intégré:

Grade 10:

      • SA Pre-IB French 10 Art dramatique 11

Grade 11:

      • IB French 11 Mode de vie actif 11 or IB Histoire 11

Grade 12:

      • IB French 12 Géographie planétaire 12 or IB Histoire 12


In addition, IB Diploma Students who wish to have an IB Bilingual Diploma designation, must take IB Histoire 11 and 12.


  • Students who are taking IB French 12 at the Higher Level (HL) will need four other courses (instead of five) to receive the Integrated French Certificate (Certificate en français intégré).

  • All students who will receive an Integrated French Certificate (Certificate en français intégré) will be eligible to write the OPI exam in grade 12 through the Department of Education. (DELF testing is not currently available in Nova Scotia Public Schools.)

  • Students taking IB French 11 and 12 as a component of the IB Diploma, but are not taking courses to receive an Integrated French Certificate, may be eligible to write the OPI exam in grade 12 through the IB programme.

  • Please note: An IB Diploma student's ability to earn the IB Bilingual Diploma designation and/or the Certificate en français intégré will depend on course availability due to scheduling and numbers.
