Students will be expected to:
1: Examine the origins of Buddhism resulting from the enlightenment of Siddhartha Gautama.
2: Examine the basic elements of Buddhist philosophy: the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, Three Characteristics of Existence, karma, samsara, nirvana, The Three Refuges, The Five Precepts.
3: Examine excerpts from scriptures.
4: Describe the three types of Buddhism: Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana (Tibetan) and explain their subtypes.
5: Demonstrate an understanding of Buddhist rituals and relate them to Buddhist philosophy.
6: Examine how Buddhist philosophy attempts to overcome suffering.
