Learning goals for today's lesson:
I can recycle materials by creating something new.
I can decide which materials work best.
I can talk about what I created.
A variety of materials, such as, plastic bottle, candy wrappers or food containers, newspaper, magazine pages, cardboard, old toys that are broken, cereal or tissue box, toilet paper roll, milk carton, scrap pieces of fabric or an old t-shirt, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, screws or bolts, clothes pins, broken shoelaces, etc.
Glue, tape, string or stapler
Scissors
Art supplies, such as, paint, markers, construction paper, feathers, pompoms, etc.
Optional: materials found outside, such as, rocks, grass, dandelions, sticks, leaves.
Together you have been learning about reducing, reusing, and recycling. Look back at all of your work and the pictures you created. Talk about ways that you reduced, reused, and recycled in your home. You can also check out your plant and see how the yogurt container is holding up. Wow! You did a great job and you have learned so much!
Let your child see all of the materials that you have available. Today your child will create something new by using at least three different materials. Give your child time to tinker with all of the materials and come up with a plan. Note: It does not matter how big or small the idea is, the point is to have fun finding new ways to reuse materials. Let your child's creativity grow!
Here are a few examples of creating something new. Feel free to come up with your own idea or get inspired by seeing what other kids have created!
I'm sure your child came up with a great idea. Celebrate what they created by asking a few questions:
What did you create?
What materials did you use?
What is your favorite thing about your creation?
What was most challenging when you were making your creation?
Is there anything that you wish you could do with it?
Don't forget to clean up your mess.
Hope you had fun learning about reducing, reusing and recycling materials.
