Set two bowls of water in front of your child. Ask your child:
How can water on our earth get dirty?
Keeping one bowl of water untouched, let your child experiment with the other bowl of water. Let them mix in the oil, dirt, paper, and plastic. Use a spoon to stir it up. GROSS! Compare the two bowls of water, ask your child:
Which bowl of water would be safe to drink? Why? Note: Do not drink the water!
With a pencil and a piece of paper, ask your child:
Draw a picture of what the clean water looks like and a picture of what the dirty water looks like. Optional Note: They can color the picture.
It is important that we protect the earth. We need clean air to breath, clean land to live on, and clean water to drink! If we do not protect our earth it could become dirty and polluted, just like the dirty water you and your child mixed together. Point to the dirty water and ask your child:
How could we clean this water? Note: Do not worry if your child seems confused. Together you can come up with ways to clean the water, e.g. pick out all of the paper and plastic with a spoon/tongs or filter the water with the coffee filter.
Have fun experimenting how clean you can get the water.
It's a lot of work to clean the water once it is dirty. Ask your child:
How clean could we get the dirty water? Optional: You could ask your child to draw a picture of the dirty water now that it is cleaned. Note: The water may still look dirty.
What are ways that we could have kept the water clean in the first place?
Don't forget to clean up the mess!
Hope you had fun today! See you tomorrow
