Bluenose Academy is a union of several local schools
Bluenose Academy opened its doors to students on March 21, 2012. Students from the former Lunenburg Jr./Sr. High School, Centre Consolidated School, Riverport and District Elementary School and Lunenburg Academy joined together in this 21st Century School. Bluenose Academy is a primary to grade 9 school. Our enrollment is typically around 610 students. The school colours are blue and black and the seahawk is the mascot of the school.
Bluenose Academy was designed with Lunenburg in mind
Bluenose Academy is located in the historic town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, best known as the home of the Bluenose. Lunenburg's "Old Town" also has UNESCO World Heritage status, and the town's architecture inspired the design of the school. The architects selected the deep red colour scheme to represent the classic red buildings on Lunenburg's famous waterfront. The interior scheme was designed to reflect Lunenburg's connection with the dory. Both the interior colours and varnished "spars" and "booms" are reflective of Lunenburg's shipbuilding and fishing community.
Bluenose Academy is a Green School
Perhaps the most impressive feature of the Bluenose Academy is its Green design. The school was designed to LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Gold standards. To meet these standards, five key areas design much be met: water conservation, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, materials and resources, innovation in design. Bluenose Academy has natural light for 75% of the occupied space, a green roof, and solar hot water collectors. A cistern is used to collect storm water from our rooftop for non-portable water (non-drinking water), such as flushing toilets. 48.6% of the energy used by the building is produced through renewable energy sources, such as our voltaic solar panels. Bluenose Academy is proud to be a leader in energy and environmental efficiency.
