Coffee with Cory
On Wednesday October 21st, I had the pleasure of presenting a Dean of Students update to interested parents who joined myself and Dr Kianti for coffee with Pak Cory. These updates included references to how we are supporting student wellbeing, developments in the area of ‘Inclusion’ and learning support and our stance on child protection.
If you missed the presentation, but would like to know more, please find the link below for the slideshow.
Halloween Week
We have been intentional in putting in place support structures, during HBL, that facilitate social interaction between our students. In the final week before break, in a joint initiative between student council and the House Captains, we created a fun packed Halloween spirit week
During the week, there were a range of house competitions including; spooky writing, spooky TikTok, cookie decoration, dress up and decorate the room competitions. With each entry, participants won points for their house. In the final Fri-Yay! before the October break, we shared some of the competition entries from the week with the whole Secondary community.

In the wellbeing presentation featured in the Coffee with Cory event, you will have heard references to ‘social emotional learning’. Over the coming months and years, social and emotional learning will feature more and more in our work with our students.
How often do we publish? We publish monthly issues, starting with a reveal of the issue’s prompt or theme on the first of the month, followed by articles from each division under that theme. For the remainder of the time, we publish submissions from students, and we are active on Instagram Stories, linking our audience to the latest updates on current world affairs, or informing about school events. We also routinely upload IGTVs.
What have we done so far? For our debut issue in September, our theme was Shaping Peace Together - inspired by this year’s International Peace Day theme. We discussed topics such as some good news that happened this year to what to watch when you want to find inner peace. Our October issue had the theme Sanity is Not Statistical as we focused on mental health. In this issue we talked about common mental health issues in teens and some activities you can do for self care.
Where can we find it? Our main publication is at @gjshawker on Instagram. You can directly contact us at gjsthehawker@gmail.com for any further inquiries!
The collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), co-founded by Daniel Goleman in 1994, provides a clear framework of social emotional competencies that define exactly what we mean when we refer to social emotional skills.
The CASEL skill competencies are:
● Self-awareness
● Self-Management
● Social awareness
● Relationship skills
● Responsible Decision Making
At GJS, work is currently underway to build an extended advisory curriculum (to be launched in August 2021) that explicitly teaches these SEL skills to students in year 7 through to year 12.
Towards the end of this academic year, we will be reaching out to Secondary parents in order to create a parent focus group for the extended Advisory curriculum. We will be looking for a small group of interested parents who we hope will represent a diverse range of backgrounds in order to ensure that feedback is comprehensive.
In the meantime, if you are interested and would like to find out more about social emotional learning, CASEL have released this video, especially for parents:
The Hawker
What is it? The Hawker is Global Jaya’s student-led magazine, covering lifestyle, current events, entertainment, and scholastic news. It used to be published on issuu.com every month, though now we are at @gjshawker on Instagram.
Who creates it? The Hawker is entirely run by students of Global Jaya. The editors-in-chief for the 2020-21 school year are Yousra Ghaada Sofyan (Year 12) and Mahira Jandini Desrino (Year 12), who are also Head of Current Events and Head of Lifestyle respectively. We are joined by other MYP and DP students in Global Jaya School as well.
What is the purpose of the publication? We wanted to bring the magazine back after it had gone on a hiatus in 2019 when the editors in chief at the time graduated from Global Jaya School. We decided to revive it as a quick and easy way for students of Global Jaya School to connect with each other better during the home-based learning induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Hawker also serves as a platform for GJS students to showcase their talent and creativity as we are open for submissions each month.
