Calming Strategies
Year 2 students are currently doing a project called My Health Magazine. In this project, students have the opportunity to show their creativity by designing their magazine, sharing knowledge and also giving some tips about staying healthy. Each week, students explored different subtopics such as nutrition, exercise, wellbeing, and hygiene.
In the Wellbeing Week which happened on 5-13 of October, Year 2 students were exploring the zones of regulation. Ibu Ninggar came as the guest speaker and shared about the zones of regulation and some calming strategies that students can do at home, such as playing with a stress ball, using a calming jar, doodling, and also trying breathing strategies. On the following days, students and teachers then made the stress ball and calming jar together.
Making the stress ball was quite challenging and fun at the same time for some students because they have to put the flour into a balloon, but in the end, we all did it successfully. We even decorated our stress ball!
Making the calming jar turned out to be easier than the stress ball. Students were given choices to make a calming jar with or without glitter. Looking at the bubbles and glitter inside the jar will help us to feel calm and relaxed.
Students reflected on their learning experiences by choosing one calming strategy that they presented on their Health Magazine. They also selected which strategies are most effective to help them stay and go back to the green zone of joy, calmness and readiness to learn.
Dentist Guest Speaker
After completing the Wellbeing Week, Year 2 students then continued the project with Hygiene Week. During this week, another guest speaker from RSPI Bintaro joined our Google Meet session and shared knowledge and some tips about dental hygiene. Our guest speaker was Dr. Dhea, a pediatric dentist from RSPI Bintaro, and she shared lots of essential knowledge such as the parts/layers of a tooth, how to brush our teeth properly, what types of food we should eat and what types of food we should avoid if we want to have healthy teeth. Our dental health is essential so that we can eat and talk properly. We were also informed that going to the dentist during the Covid-19 situation is safe because the hospital provides health procedures and follows health protocols in their clinic.
Year 2 students demonstrated they were inquirers as they actively participated and asked smart questions and listened to the doctor’s explanations nicely. We are thankful to RSPI Bintaro for supporting our learning in this unit.
