Parents Testimony

Regarding the Year 10 Personal Project, Parents of Year 10 were invited to attend a mini-workshop. This workshop was held last Tuesday, 1st October 2019, and was conducted by Ibu Popy and Ibu Dani. Both of them introduced themselves to the Parents as the Coordinators of the Year 10 Personal Project, and they explained that this workshop was held to help Parents understand the Personal Project and what the students are supposed to do with their projects. They were being clear that Parents should not help their children doing the Personal Project, but only to help supervise things such as datelines.
At the beginning of the session, Ibu Dani, supported by Ibu Popy, gave out a number of slides explaining basic guidelines of the Personal Project, such as how the Supervisors picked each project anonymously, the Supervisor’s responsibilities, and expectations from the students. Then they explained the Personal Project criteria and gave examples of these criteria. To make sure The Parents understood about these criteria, we were formed into groups and were shown a picture. Then all of the groups were challenged to define the Global Context of that particular picture. After discussing it together within each group, we had a bit of time to share our thoughts with the other groups; however, we did not have enough time to go through every group.
After the groups’ sharing, Ibu Popy and Ibu Dani continued by explaining about the assessment of the Personal Project, how to grade it, and also the timeline. The Parents were allowed to interrupt at any time with questions that were related to each slide, and answers were given on the spot as well.
I thought this workshop was nicely done. Everything was carefully thought of, from providing tea, coffee, and some snacks, all the way to stationaries. Ibu Popy and Ibu Dani treated the Parents in a very friendly way that made us feel comfortable during the whole workshop to reach a better understanding of Personal Project. Thank you Ibu Popy and Ibu Dani.

Coming from different academic systems, we have decided to continue our son’s study under the IB method. We have seen and proven the excellence of IB in how it shapes a person’s character and performance, including about PP; the peak of the MYP supervised by the IB, which will be the major determining factor moving up to 11th grade. However, it’s common for us to find people villainizing it. As a newcomer, Global Jaya’s PP Mini-Workshop for Parents comes as a personal compass for us that makes everything makes sense and keeps us on track.
Despite having less than half of the grade’s parents attending and the timing of the event which could have been earlier, the Mini-Workshop held on Tuesday, October 1st, 2019 was an answer towards everything we need to know about PP. It went well and the materials addressed by Ibu Dani and Ibu Popy has successfully briefed parents in understanding it in hopes to maximize the program.
As one of the attendees, I feel like I am given the chance to help my son in facing the process of PP making. Understanding the concept of a supervisor in the program is someone to be convinced rather than to guide, also adding that PP requires task-specific clarifications on different criterion, we as parents can help to guide our children so that they can achieve their goal, and understand to avoid conflicts pertaining to all the time consumed. This is because we realize that every global context and all the criterion required in PP will be parallel towards their way of thinking and work ethic in the future.
As an IB newbie, Global Jaya’s PP Mini-Workshop for Parents has been an insightful experience.

“What crosses your mind when you see this picture?"
It was a question from Ibu Dani to the parents when we attended the PP Mini Workshop for Year 10 Parents. We were shown a picture of a forest with rows of trees. We immediately discussed within the assigned group created by Ibu Popy, then we came up with the following ideas:
1. Family Camping Ground
2. Art performance, like music, theatrical, drama, painting, etc
3. Wellness and Beauty (yoga, meditation, self healing).
We then selected one as the theme, namely Family Camping Ground, and complete it with the following Global Context:
1. Identities and Relationships. Family Camping will help strengthen relationships with each other as emotional bonding while maintaining one’s own identity.
2. Personal and Cultural Expression. Personalities will be seen when faced with problems that arise when camping as self actualization.
3. Orientation in space and time. Camping activities are good to break from daily routines.
4. Scientific and Technical Innovation. Camping is good for the family to go back to nature and away from all the high-tech tools.
5. Globalization and Sustainability. Families are trained to be friendly to nature, make, carry, and use equipment that is environmental-friendly.
6. Fairness and Development. Practicing in terms of fairness of rights and obligations in the family, father, mother, brother, and sister. We then presented the ideas, global context and products that has been created above to other parents
That was a glimpse of the PP Mini Workshop that was held on Oct. 1. Compared with what students need to do, it was just a little exercise to look for ideas and products. Our children have to do a lot of things, from preparation, consultation with tutors, making products, reports to exhibitions. As culmination of the MYP Program, they have to do the best to show and apply their skills acquired through their MYP years. We as parents are fortunate to be able to take part in this Workshop, even though the duration was short. We now know and understand what our children are doing, and can help as much as possible. PP is part of a recommendation for students going to DP. Still long way to go until PP Exhibition January 20, 2020.

PP Mini Workshop for Parents went really well. It was a relaxed 2 hour session full of questions from the parents. The warm interaction between the parents and the teachers showed their enthusiasm for joining this workshop
Bu Dani and Bu Popy answered all the questions clearly and made it fun with examples that helped us understand it more. This is an effective way for parents to learn the Personal Project that our children have been doing. Now that we recognize the project, we can follow our children’s process well and understand why they need supporting facilities. We can also be more prepared to discuss the project with them. I am glad and happy that I can join this Mini Workshop for parents.
