In Year 5, we have been exploring how “Humans apply their understanding of scientific forces to create and problem-solve” under the transdisciplinary theme ‘How the World Works’. To begin the unit, we went on a school tour to identify areas that could be improved to enhance school culture. As we narrowed down our identified issue, we organized ourselves into groups by ranking our Approaches to Learning (ATL) strengths.
We have used the design cycle to solve and redesign solutions to our issues while using simple machines and our understanding of scientific forces to create our design models. Below is an explanation of how we worked through the design cycle.
The Design Process
1. Identify a problem
The first step was to identify an issue, look around our school and find some problems, preferably more than one, later choose which one is best.
2. Brainstorm
The second step was to brainstorm and identify possible solutions for our identified problem. We used our ATL skills, particularly Thinking skills, to brainstorm logical solutions for the potential problems presently at GJS.
3. Design a Solution
From this point, we began learning how to research solutions. We were taught Research skills to find a solution in keeping with GJS school culture.
4. Build the Solution
From here we were grouped based on a survey of our ATL strengths. Strong Social skills will be needed to collaborate with group members effectively. Through research, communication and strong time-management, we created our model. The model should be a realistic representation of what our real solution would look like.
5. Test and Evaluate
Once we completed the model, we tested and reflected on our work to make any changes. For this, we used our Research skills for experimenting. We tested it with the problem and fixed some of the mistakes.
6. Reflect and Redesign
Using our Thinking skills to reflect our designed solution, giving our friends constructive feedback on the necessary changes to their design.
7. Share the solution
We shared our solution first to our class, then to a teacher panel, and a few of us shared with the GJS Leadership Team. Some of us shared our ideas to other departments so they could use our ideas in the future.
In conclusion, we will use the Design Process to help solve future problems or even change our design as part of our reflection. We want our Action in this unit to be to create a design for a problem that we’ve seen frequently in our local environment. We also want to present our solutions to the Primary Leadership Team and/or other relevant teams to have our solution become reality.
