There are many ways we can help the environment at school, one of the ways is to reduce plastic in our daily life.
Let’s start with why we need to think about our plastic consumption. There are many of us who take advantage of simple things like plastic bags and conveniently wrapped snacks. This leads to a great deal of plastic waste in our bins, especially at school. It is important for us to think about our food purchases from outside providers and the use of plastic containers. Are there perhaps more sustainable practices that we can use? If we don’t start now, we are simply contributing to the massive amount of excess waste being produced every day. It is destroying our environment and affecting other living things, such as plants and animals.
The Environment Committee and Student Council Representatives had an opportunity to view a short film about how our waste here at school is added to the massive garbage mountains at Bantar Gerbang. The students were quite overwhelmed by what they saw and immediately expressed a desire to find out how we could be reducing, reusing or recycling our excess waste. We have brainstormed our ideas and although we are yet to solidify our actions, we know we want to take a proactive approach here at school.
Armed with a mask and a hairnet, we visited the Canteen’s kitchen and saw how they stored their produce and how they dispose of their wet and dry garbage. We then went to see where the school temporarily stores the garbage at the waste disposal area located near the Secondary parking area.
We now want to hear from you; students, teachers, parents and other members of the school community. What can wdo to become a sustainable school? Let’s start small but make a big impact by creating an environmentally-friendly community.
