Year 2 started their new unit this term under the transdisciplinary theme Who We Are. Students were introduced to the unit with rotation activities in the MPH. There were 4 stations that they needed to visit. At station 1, they learned about hygiene, discussing their experience and understanding about taking care of their body. At station 2, they learned about healthy food. They explored in pairs about balanced meals using a “healthy food plate” puzzle. At station 3, students experienced a physical activity by playing with a parachute. Before this, the teachers explained that we must always warm up before doing any physical activity so we don’t get injured. At station 4, they learned about emotions, and started to recognise feelings by reading facial and body expressions. Students were very enthusiastic when doing each activity. They not only showed their prior knowledge but also learned new things after doing these activities.

To get a deeper understanding of UOI2 and our central idea, “the choices people make impact their health and wellbeing”, the year 2 students visited RSPI Bintaro on Tuesday 24th September. They were very excited. Before we went there, they prepared all the questions that they were going to ask the doctors and speakers at the hospital. At RSPI Bintaro, students were given information about nutrition and how to wash their hands properly. They also practiced how to wash their hands by following the nurse’s instructions step by step. The students couldn’t wait for their turn to do it. They also visited the orthopedic surgeon and the dentist. They were taught how to take care of their bodies by exercising and warming up properly. At the dentist, they learned how to brush their teeth properly and some of them even got a dental check. So much knowledge was gathered at RSPI Bintaro, which has given the students a good starting point as they continue exploring these topics in more detail throughout the unit. The day ended by giving out certificates and souvenirs.

Not only learning about physical health, Year 2 also learned about emotional well-being, particularly around how we recognize our emotions and how we can cope with those emotions. Students did rotation activities around how to identify complex feelings that go beyond happiness and sadness. Ibu Sarah and Ibu Ninggar collaborated with the class teachers in these activities, and we learned some valuable strategies to help us. Students also did a yoga activity led by Ibu Samantha Roy from secondary. They were very enthusiastic about learning the movements and we learned to persevere when the movements became tricky! Students did reflections after the activities and chose the best regulation strategies for them to use when they are feeling frustrated, upset or worried. Well done Year 2 !
