The year 10 Mandarin and French Classes are currently learning about food and culture. We are exploring how different dishes convey different cultures through their ingredients and cooking methods. To help develop our understanding of the unit, the Mandarin students made fried wontons while the French students cooked crêpes on the 17th of January, 2020.
We learned that cooking wontons were quite simple; mix the minced meat with the seasoning, place the meat inside the dumpling skin, wrap the dumpling then fry. The French crepes were equally easy to make. Just make the dough with flour, eggs and mild, put it in the pan, let it have a nice golden color, flip the crêpe and done! Not only was this experience educating, but it was highly enjoyable.
During the cooking process, the instructions were given in Mandarin and French to encourage memorization of the Mandarin/French terms. Through a live demonstration, it was easier to familiarize ourselves with the ingredients. Food is a prescribed topic in the evaluation of the IB diploma, and hopefully this cooking class will help the students remember the vocabulary for their oral exam and writing proficiency.
