On Thursday, 23 January, Year 2 travelled to Mekarsari Taman Buah, the largest fruit garden in the world. The field trip is connected to our current unit of inquiry in which we are exploring how “plants support other living things and play an important role in people’s lives”.
After an excitement-filled bus ride, students met with their guides and planted their very own fruit tree to take home and look after. Then, it was time for a tour around the garden on the train. Everyone had fun seeing the trees and bushes, and many questions were asked about their growth and the different fruits that were produced. Lots of connections were made to our lives and our previous experiences.
After the garden tour, students had the opportunity to paint and decorate their caping (bamboo hat). This was an integrated art activity with Ibu Primi. After some relaxing painting time, students enjoyed lunch outside before heading home and having a well-earned nap on the bus.

Two of Global Jaya’s wonderful gardeners, Pak Marhadi and Pak Hasan, spent a morning with the Year 2’s and shared their knowledge of plants with us. We observed and followed the steps for how to plant a seed, and asked important questions about why we need to give the seed water, soil, fertilizer and sunlight. It has been a great opportunity for students to practice being caring and responsible, as we are watering and checking the growth of our plants every day.
