Ready for
1st Grade!

First grade readiness means different things to different people. For me, I know my kindergarten students are ready to go to 1st grade when they have mastered the following things:

ALL Letters and Sounds in the Alphabet

Kindergarten sight words

CVC Words

Writing Numbers 1-20

Knows Number names 0-31 in Random Order

Counting to 100 by 1s and 10s and 5s

Basic Adding and Subtracting to 10

Adding to Make Teen Numbers

Writing sentences using known sight words spelled correctly, starting with a capital letter, ending with punctuation, and having spaces between words. Other words can be sounded out. Pictures should match the sentences and be labeled, showing the setting, and using speech or thought bubbles for the characters.
