During the practicum, I worked with two struggling readers. One reader was at the elementary level and the other was at the secondary level. With each student, I completed fifteen sessions, including three initial assessment sessions, nine tutoring sessions, and three concluding assessment sessions. The artifact I chose to include is my case study that I conducted with a fifth grade struggling reader. I gathered a lot of information about my student to include in the case study, such as a reason for the referral, case history, educational history, family history, behavioral observations during testing, assessment results, phonemic awareness/phonics results, interpretation of information collected, recommendations for intervention, and an overall summary statement. With the case study, I included pre- and post-assessment data, detailed lesson plan procedures, and daily reflection and analysis for subsequent lessons. These lessons were created by myself and I utilized fifteen different lesson plans that focused on word study, comprehension, and fluency designed to meet the needs of my student. I also provided a comparison report to show the growth between the pre- and post-assessments at the beginning and end of the intervention. Additionally, I also worked on a parent report to summarize the information I learned about my student and to provide recommendations for further work to be done at home. Within the recommendations, I focused on word analysis skills, vocabulary development, and comprehension strategies.
