At GESS, Psychology offers students a comprehensive understanding of human behavior and mental processes through a multidisciplinary approach. The DP Psychology curriculum covers three main approaches to understanding behavior:
Biological Approach – The relationship between the brain, behavior, hormones, and genetics.
Cognitive Approach – Cognitive processes like memory, thinking, and decision-making, and how emotions influence cognition.
Sociocultural Approach – The impact of culture, social identity, and group dynamics on individual behavior and cognition.

🔸 Internal Assessment (IA) – Students conduct an experimental study, where they design, conduct, and analyze their own research project.
🔸 Examinations
Paper 1 (SL & HL) – A mix of short-answer and extended-response questions on the core approaches to understanding behavior.
Paper 2 (SL & HL) – Essay-based questions on one or more options (for HL students, two options).
Paper 3 (HL Only) – Focuses on advanced research methods, data analysis, and the application of the core approaches.
💠 Psychology at GESS: HL vs. SL
🔹 Higher Level (HL): HL students study additional topics, including the role of animal research, cognitive processing in the digital age, and the influence of globalization on behavior. They also study two options and are assessed on advanced research methods.
🔹 Standard Level (SL): SL students focus on core psychological concepts and research, with the option to study one area of applied psychology.
