There are a lot of things you should say during a JBL event, and also a lot of things you definitely shouldn't say. This language is very important to maintain the integrity of the event and branding, so please read through this section carefully to familiarize yourself with the JBL Dictionary.
The JBL Cheat Sheet

Clues, Responses, and the Clue Board:
The display of categories and point amounts is called the Clue Board or the Board. Please always refer to it as such.
When a player selects a point amount, they are selecting a clue, not an answer or question. When a player submits their guess, they are submitting a response, not a question or answer. You may be used to hosting trivia, where you ask questions and players give answers - for JBL events, please strike those words from your vocabulary. In this game, we have clues and responses.
The Jeopardy! Round (and more)
Yes, it's the Jeopardy! Round. NOT the Single Jeopardy! Round. That doesn't exist. As you host the game, you'll move players through the Jeopardy! Round, the Double Jeopardy! Round, and Final Jeopardy!
It's vital to read the quiz script prior to arriving at a venue to host Jeopardy! Bar League (JBL). You should be able to nail any tricky pronunciations and adequately describe how each round works, like a Trebek, Jennings, or Jost.
Pro tip: When reviewing the material ahead of time, make a note of where the Daily Doubles are in the Jeopardy! and Double Jeopardy! Rounds. Whichever team finds the Daily Double gets a prize, so you'll want to be paying attention to who has control of the board when it's selected.
If you have any questions about the script, please email qmsupport@geekswhodrink.com
JBL scripts are available about 24-30 hours before quiz start times, roughly between 12 and 2pm CT the day prior to a scheduled quiz. A PDF of the quiz, including a pronunciation guide and any additional host notes is available via the JBL host app. To download your quiz script, follow the instructions below or watch this quick video.
Oh, and this is an example of a JBL quiz script. It replicates the JBL board and shows the clue values below the correct responses.
Host notes, like how to explain that the letters "id" will appear together and in order in all correct responses in a round with a title like We'll Need Your "ID", will appear at the top of the script.
Pronunciation guides will appear elsewhere in the script.
ALWAYS READ YOUR SCRIPT BEFORE ARRIVING TO HOST!
Be prepared! It's the quiz host's solemn creed.
If you have any questions about the script, please email qmsupport@geekswhodrink.com.

One of the perks of being a JBL Host is getting to choose your background music. Keep in mind that you're entertaining an audience, so you might want to try and appeal to the masses. That being said, feel free to mix it up and throw in some of your favorite artists as well!
Heads up: You need to turn your music down with the volume control on the media player itself and not the mixer volume. The JBL app has sound effects and if you turn down the mixer, you're also turning those off.
You do need music for the pre-game period and breaks. You are not required to play music during the 35 seconds when you are reading clues and players are submitting their responses.
If you play music throughout the game during the question submission intervals, please remember to adjust music volume on the media player itself (see above heads up). You need about 2.5-3 hours of music and it should be suitable for all audiences/radio-friendly.
Please use a music service that is ad-free. If you currently have a premium subscription to programs like Spotify, Apple Music, or Amazon Music, then you can use that. If you do not pay for an ad-free music streaming service, you can use freefy.app. Just create an account using your email address and start building a playlist. It's not ad-free, but the ads are on-screen and silent, so they won't interrupt your flow.
Connect to an External Display
Connect to the display with an HDMI cable (or whatever your venue is using) from your laptop.
On a Windows computer, press the Windows Key + P and then select "Extend".
On a Mac, choose Apple Menu and then System Preferences.
Under Displays, click "Use as", and then click "Stop mirroring." This will make sure that your two displays are being used separately
Then select your personal device, click "Use as," and then "Main display." Alternatively, you can select the extended screen, click "Use as," and then "Extended display."
Open your browser.
Navigate to https://host.playjeopardy.live/, and make sure that the host app is open in its own window - NOT in a tab in the same window as the Opcon.
If prompted, log in.
Click Play Game on the main menu screen of the JBL Host App
Load the correct content by selecting:
a. The venue where you're hosting.
b. The date of the quiz
c. Content Source needs to be GWD Jeopardy Database
d. Then click Get Content by Date
e. Event Type needs to be LiveShow Season 0
f. Game Config needs to be Default (DO NOT select Events in Game Config!!!!!)
g. Jeopardy Content will load based on the Date field above. You do not need to change anything here.
h. Click Load Content
Click Open Opcon to launch the Opcon in your browser - again, make sure that this is a separate window from the host app.
Click Play Game in the bottom right-hand corner of the content loader screen
Drag the host app to the player-facing screen and press "F" to enter fullscreen mode.
Click Play Game on the main menu screen
If you forgot to click "Open Opcon" while loading your quiz, no worries. Navigate to playjeopardylive.com and log in with the same account you used to log into the host app
From there, enter a name of your choosing, the 6 digit join code from the JBL game, and click "Join Game." Once you do, you'll be prompted to enter OpCon mode as long as you've logged into the browser with the same account you used to log into the host app. Click "Accept."
Press "Show Welcome Screen" to display the QR code, Join Code, and welcome message on the player-facing screen, and have fun!
This may seem like a given, since most JBL venues will utilize a screen or screens to display the Host App (AKA Big Board). (Optimally, this is how the game is intended to be hosted.) But if you don't have use of screens, you can still host JBL, so this applies to screenless JBL games and running a JBL game at home for practice or training.
When you launch a game in the Host App and then open the Opcon, please make sure you drag the Opcon out to its own window.
If you run the Opcon and Host App in separate tabs in the same window, IT WILL SLOW DOWN YOUR GAME. This is due to information caching, yadda yadda. Anyway, it's not good. So yoink out that Host App, like you would if you were dragging it to a screen.
Print two of these, get them laminated, and bring 'em with you everywhere you host. You'll also want a dry-erase or wet-erase marker so that you can write the Player Code down. We'll reimburse you for the printing and laminating costs, just remember to keep your receipts and fill out the reimbursement form.
Please note: JBL is intended to utilize a large screen/display/TV for the clue board. The JBL Opcon allows the host to display the QR code and join code at any time during the game using the Toggle QR Code button. Unless your JBL venue does not have screens, it may be unneccessary to have a laminated player registration sheet.
Tell the manager on duty, or the bartender, or whoever you need to talk to that you're ready to take over the house sound and start playing music for quiz. Once they stop playing their tunes, you can go ahead and start your playlist.
Heads up: You need to turn your music down with the volume control on the media player itself and not the mixer volume. The JBL app has sound effects and if you turn down the mixer, you're also turning those off.
Order yourself some food (remember, you have a $25 tab!), grab prizes and bonus tokens (if you have them) from the bar, and settle in for a fun night of quiz!
Please make sure to close your tab before leaving the venue. If you exceed the allotted $25, you are responsible for the difference. This $25 does not include gratuity for the server or bartender. Please take care of your servers. We strongly encourage tipping, especially if you want to establish a good rapport with the venues where you're working.
Venues are required to provide first and second place prizes, plus three bonus prizes. If you're having trouble with prizes or your tab, contact your manager or reach out to qmsupport@geekswhodrink.com
