The best way to get started is to read this whole handbook.
But if you're looking for a "quick-start guide" of sorts, here you go!
Step 1: Set up your account on Obey Your Quizmaster (plus troubleshooting)
Step 2: Verify Your Laptop Meets Minimum Requirements
Step 3: Log into the Host App and Opcon
Search your inbox (spam and trash, too!) for an email from motherbrain@geekswhodrink.com with instructions to create your account. If you have a Google email, use the Sign in with Google option. Otherwise, create a username and password.
Once your account is created, navigate to the Bio & Avatar tab. Add a picture (doesn't need to be of you) and a nickname. This is what will display on our website when you publish an event report. Below you can see what happens if you don't have a picture or nickname, and what it looks like when you do.
If you're brand new to Geeks Who Drink and Jeopardy!, you'll need this account for substitutions and publishing your event reports, which is how you get paid.
Login issues on OYQ are almost certainly due to your browser's security settings (or a firewall) blocking a cookie OYQ places so you can login. The good news is that the fix is easy!
Option 1: We suggest logging in with Google Chrome. All you have to do is allow a site exception for cookies. Please note that if you're logging in at work or school, you might not be able to change these settings. For more help, contact your administrator.
On your computer, open Chrome
At the top right, click More (the 3 vertical dots) > Settings
Click Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data.
Next to "Sites that can always use cookies", "Always clear cookies when windows are closed," or "Sites that never use cookies," click Add
Enter the web address www.obeyyourquizmaster.com
Select Add
Option 2: If you prefer Firefox, you can do the same thing following these instructions:
After navigating to www.obeyyourquizmaster.com, click on the 'i' in a circle, next to the padlock at the left side of the URL bar.
Click on the little black arrow on the dropdown (next to 'Connection') and then on More Information, which will take you to Page Info.
Click on the Permission tab and scroll down to Set Cookies. Uncheck Use Default and check Allow.
Close and restart Firefox.
Option 3: If you prefer Safari, don't.
As a host, we recommend that you have a laptop with these minimum specs:
i7 processor (4 cores), Windows 10, 16 GB RAM
Chrome browser, WebGL2 enabled, HDMI port
A stable internet connection
For Mac:
Graphics Device: Apple M2
Graphics Memory: 10922 MB
Operating System: Mac OS X 15.1.1
Processor: Apple M2
Processor Count: 8
System Memory: 16384 MB
This table outlines the minimum internet download speeds, depending on the number of anticipated players:
When hired, your email address will be added to the Jeopardy Bar League! Host App whitelist. When this happens, you will receive an email asking you to reset your password. Go ahead and do this. Once you have created a password, you're good to go! You can either log in to the host app with your email address and the password you just created, or with the "Sign in with Apple/Google" options, if applicable.
You should only need to log in once. Navigate to https://host.playjeopardy.live/. Once there, click to login and use whichever sign-in method works with your email address. Make sure it's the same email address you provided when hired, otherwise you will get an error saying that you are not an authorized user.
You'll also need to log into the OpCon. After loading up the host app, launch playjeopardylive.com and log into the Opcon with the SAME ACCOUNT that you used for the host app. Later on, when you enter a name and join code, you'll be prompted to take control of the game, rather than join as a player.
Before attending training, we recommend running a training game in the host app and getting used to how to launch a JBL game and operate the Opcon. Here's a short video on how to do that.
A few notes on the training game:
- You can't mess anything up by running it. Practice! Practice! Practice!
- Feel free to have players log in and play. It's good practice. We love practice.
- Response times for players are set for 20 seconds, instead of the 35 seconds allowed in a live game. This is meant to facilitate being able to host a "whole" game without having to sit through it.
- The leaderboard updates pop up after every 6 clues, instead of after every 15 clues.
- We recommend using the JBL Host Cheat Sheet with the training game, especially while handling Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardy!
Click "PLAY GAME" on the main screen
Set the venue to Training
All training and practice needs to be done using Training as the venue. DO NOT use regular venues unless you are hosting a live quiz.
The date doesn't matter, just leave it alone.
Set the source to Local (instead of GWD Jeopardy Database)
Click "Get All Content", not by date.
Set all fields to "Training"
Click "Load Content"
Click "Open Opcon" to launch your browser. If you skip this step, no big deal - you can go there manually by navigating to playjeopardylive.com
Click "Play Game."
In the Opcon, enter a name and the join code displayed in the bottom left of the steam game (host app), then click "Accept" when it asks if you want to enter Opcon mode. From there, click away!
Tip: To skip ahead, press the 8 key on the Host app while a question is active. That will move you to the leaderboard at the end of a round.
Note: There is no PDF copy associated with the training game. The PDF button will not be visible when you load this game.
