A Pre-Quiz Registration script and the Quiz Introduction script can be found in the Jeopardy! Bar League Cheat Sheet.
There are sound effects in the JBL player-facing screen. Make sure that you pause your background music (or turn the volume down on the media player itself), and don't just turn down your mixer or laptop volume, otherwise players will not be able to hear the sound effects or theme music.
Main tab - This is the main game control page. On the left-hand side is the button you'll use to advance the game state.
Players tab - at the beginning of the game, team names will populate here as groups join. To select a team, click the bar to the right of the team name. It will turn green if the team is selected (see image). As teams join, click Approve All and the team names will begin to scroll across the welcome screen. We suggest that you repeat this process a few times, editing groups of team names as they come in. If a team joins later in the game, you will still need to approve their team name.
If a team name violates the code of conduct, you can edit it on this screen by clicking the pencil icon and changing the name. Please note that if you edit a team name, it will disappear from the Recent tab, as editing it automatically approves it.
In addition, the team whose name you changed will be alerted that their name was changed due to violating the code of conduct (see image).
You can also view and edit individual player names (which will not be visible to the public, unless it's a Jeopardy! Interactive game) by clicking the Individuals button underneath the Players tab.
If you'd prefer a video demonstration, check that out here.
Leaderboard tab - allows you to view current standings and scores, as well as edit the scores throughout the game in the event of a technical error (e.g. they accidentally submitted an incorrect wager for the Daily Double, or their connection timed out and their answer didn't submit).
If they simply didn't get credit for a correct response, use the History tab to make sure that the answer was marked as Correct.
If you'd like a video demonstration, click here.
History tab - shows which clues have already been selected from the board and responded to (selected clues have display a point value of 0, a bug that is currently being fixed).
By selecting a previously read clue, you will be able to view the responses and override as correct/incorrect in the event of an error.
For a video demonstration, click here.
Script tab - shows all clues in the current round, including their category, point value, and correct response. If a clue has already been selected from the board, its point value on the script tab will display as 0 (this is a bug that is currently being fixed).
For a video demonstration, click here.
Using the OpCon, select Start Game, let the video play, and then riff a bit, allowing players to display their name on the big screen.
If you’ve joined you can “buzz in” on your phone and you’ll pop up on the screen. I see [TEAM NAME] has joined. And welcome to [TEAM NAME].
After or before the team buzz in time, read the Quiz Introduction and rules. Then click Show Categories begin displaying the categories and follow the script:
Now it's time for the Jeopardy! round. Your categories are...
Read each category as they appear. If a category contains a word in quotes, that means whatever is in the quotation marks will appear in the responses. Be sure to let teams know about this rule! To continue, click Show the Board
As always, we'll start with our first category, [CATEGORY] for 200 points.
Click Show Board.
Once a category and clue have been selected:
Repeat the name of the category and the clue amount
Click Start Clue in the OpCon. Make sure to wait for the animation to complete on the player-facing screen before reading the clue aloud (you'll see it on your screen before players do).
Read the clue twice. Players will have 35 seconds to respond. The Opcon will show a countdown underneath the game control button.
As responses come in, they will be automatically marked as correct or incorrect. You can override this scoring on your screen. You must do any overrides before clicking Show Fastest Player. You cannot override responses once you've moved past the clue.
Once time has run out or all teams have submitted a response, you will reveal and read the correct response and then click Show Fastest Player.
The Opcon will display "[TEAM NAME] responded the fastest. [TEAM NAME] selects the next clue." Click Back to board on the Opcon to display the board for players. Then call on the fastest to select the next clue. You can do this in one of two ways:
They can select the next clue on their device (Preferred)
They can shout it out while you select it from the Opcon (This is okay, if it works for your venue)
Announce the category and points, click Start Clue, and repeat all of the previous steps.
If no team responds correctly, the last team to pick the clue will pick again. Alternatively, you can pick the clue as the host if you'd like to speed up the game.
Note: Halfway through the Jeopardy! round (after 15 clues), the Opcon controls will change to say "Show Leaderboard". At that point, you'll take a 10 minute break.
When you return, you'll then click "Display Selected Player" to reveal who responded the fastest on the previous question, and continue as normal.
The Daily Double can appear at any point during the round - first last, or anywhere in between! After the Daily Double sound and animation, and after the teams quiet down, you’ll need to explain the rules for Bar League. For a video example of how to run the Daily Double, see below.
While the Daily Double graphic is on the screen, read the following:
You have found our first Daily Double of the night, which means you're our first Bonus Prize Winner! It’s a little different from the TV show. Everyone gets to play the Daily Double, and one team that responds correctly will get a bonus prize!
For those who don’t know how it works, you’ll be able to wager points up to your current score, or up to 1,000 points if below that score, based on how you think you’ll do in the category [SELECTED CATEGORY]. A little known Jeopardy! rule, you must wager at least 5 points.
Display the wagering controls by clicking Wager Screen and say:
You should see the wager controls on your devices now. Remember, you have to wager at least 5 points here. I'll give everyone about 30 seconds to place their wagers, and [TEAM NAME] you can come and collect your bonus prize...
While the players are placing their wagers, the leaderboard will display on the player-facing screen. Go ahead and read through the team list and vamp for about 20-30 seconds. As mentioned above, the team that found the Daily Double is the team that wins the bonus prize. They can come up and claim their prize during wagering.
Once time is up, click Start Clue the game will present you with a warning screen letting you know players might still be wagering. Make sure to announce that their time is almost up before clicking Continue.
Time is up, so make sure you've finished placing your wagers... and here's your clue... [READ THE CLUE]
After the Daily Double, proceed with the normal game flow. Fastest response can select the next clue, or call on another team, or select it yourself.
Like the commercial break for TV, we take a short break halfway through the Jeopardy! round. This break should last 10 minutes. Please do not make it shorter. There are three breaks in the game - halfway through the Jeopardy! round, after the Jeopardy! round, and after Double Jeopardy! The break lengths are 10 minutes, 10 minutes, and 5 minutes.
Take the first break after clue 15, when the Leaderboard appears. At the first break, let teams know they can change their team captain via the three-line menu on their captain's device. Many players miss this functionality. It's easy to use but also easy to miss.
During the break we encourage you to chat with some of the teams, and take team pictures for your JBL Log. You can let teams know that pictures will appear tomorrow on geekswhodrink.com. (It's always okay for a team to decline having their picture taken.) Encourage people to order food or drinks, ask people how they came up with their team name, what they’re eating/drinking, etc. You’ll probably develop a rapport with some regulars.
When there's about 1 minute remaining in the break, go ahead and display the "Welcome Back!" screen from the Opcon. If you're skipping a break, then just skip over this screen, obviously.
When there is only one clue left, the teams do not need to select it. You can skip that and get right into it:
And now the last clue of the Jeopardy! round…
After the responses are in, the Opcon will prompt you to show the leaderboard by clicking Show Leaderboard.
Call out the winning team and comment how close the game is (or not). Here are some common phrases:
We’ll be back for Double Jeopardy! after a quick break.
Remember, anything can happen in Double Jeopardy! We’ll take a quick break, so be ready in 10 minutes.
Double Jeopardy! will be coming up after a quick break.
Take another 10 minute break before Double Jeopardy! Put on some background music and let people order food/drinks, use the restroom, chat, etc.
At this time, you can also let players know that if they need to switch team captains for whatever reason, they can do so by clicking the 3-line menu and selecting "change captain."
Gather the teams back to start the Double Jeopardy! round. Welcome players back, select Start Double jeopardy, then get right into the categories.
Let's start Double Jeopardy! Your categories are...
Read each category as they appear, then remind players that the point values are doubled and there are two Dily Doubles hidden in the round. You'll start with the 400 point clue in the first category again.
From here, moving through the round is the same as it was during the Jeopardy! round. There are no mid-round breaks in Double Jeopardy!
Note: Twice during the Double Jeopardy! round, the Opcon controls will change to say "Show Leaderboard". You'll then click "Display Selected Player" to reveal who responded the fastest on the previous question, and continue as normal.
The process is the same as in the first round, but you don't need to spend as much time explaining the rules.
While the Daily Double graphic is on the screen, read the following:
You found one of the Daily Doubles! During wagering, make sure to come up and claim your prize. Remember, everyone gets to play. Let's take a look at the leaderboard while you wager.
Call out some top teams, how far apart they are, etc. You can also add some commentary about wagering all your points or up to 2000 if a team is below 2000 points this round.
After wagering time is up, say:
Okay, and let's lock the wagers. Here's your clue...
Select Start Clue and Continue to display the clue.
After the Daily Double, proceed with the normal game flow. Fastest response can select the next clue, or call on another team, or select it yourself.
Repeat these steps when the next Daily Double shows up. Even if they are back to back, make sure you spend some time announcing the leaderboard so that players know how much to wager.
When there is only one clue left, the teams do not need to select it. You can skip that and get right into it:
And now the last clue of the Double Jeopardy! round…
After the responses are in, you'll display the fastest player and then the Opcon will prompt you once again to Show Leaderboard.
This is a moment to recap the scores before Final Jeopardy!
That's it for Double Jeopardy! Let's check the standings again.
Click Show Leaderboard and read through some top teams, commenting on how close or far apart the scores are.
If anyone has a score of zero or less, add:
Unfortunately for a few of you out there, you won't be able to wager if your score is zero or negative. You can still submit a response, but it will only be for fun.
We'll come back with the category and clue for Final Jeopardy! after this break.
Make sure all the teams are back, then click Reveal Category and say:
Your category for Final Jeopardy! is [CATEGORY]. Go ahead and place your final wagers.
Click Show Wager Screen to allow players to set their wagers for Final Jeopardy! DO NOT SHOW THE FINAL CLUE YET.
After the wager time is up, click Show Final Clue. Make sure any background music is turned off at this moment. It is the climactic event of the game and the Think Music will play during the response time.
Wagering is now closed; let's see what you know about [CATEGORY]. And your clue... [READ FINAL J! CLUE]. You have 30 seconds. Good luck!
Click Start Timer, and the Think Music will begin playing automatically from the OpCon.
After all responses have been submitted, you will need to carefully go through the submitted answers and then click End Judge Review Phase.
The correct response will appear on your screen - DO NOT READ IT UNTIL LATER.
From here, you'll display 3 finalists. Two of these teams are the first and second place winners for the evening. One of these teams (potentially one of the winners, but not guaranteed) will be the team that was in first place at the end of Double Jeopardy! This team's response and wager will always be revealed last. If space and time allow, invite a rep from each team to come up to the front of the room.
The Opcon will prompt you to Show Finalist #1, #2, and #3. After you've revealed the 3 finalists, say:
Okay, time's up. Let's check in with our three finalists to see if they knew the correct response.
Select Show [TEAM 1 NAME]'s Response
[TEAM 1 NAME], what was your response? [READ TEAM 1 RESPONSE].
Be sure to select Show [TEAM NAME]'s Wager as you continue, and then Show [TEAM NAME]'s Score.
[IF CORRECT, SAY] That's correct! Let's see what you wagered... [TEAM 1 WAGER]. That gives you [TEAM 1 NEW SCORE].
[IF INCORRECT, SAY] No, I'm sorry. That's not it. And what will it cost you? [TEAM 1 WAGER]. That brings you down to [TEAM 1 NEW SCORE].
You'll have some space here for commentary if they are way ahead, close to another team, still way behind, etc. The Opcon will then prompt you to Show [TEAM NAME], then Show [TEAM NAME]'s Response. Repeat the process for the final two teams.
[IF A PREVIOUS TEAM WAS CORRECT]
[TEAM 2/3 NAME], did you get [CORRECT RESPONSE]? [READ TEAM RESPONSE].
[IF NO PREVIOUS TEAM WAS INCORRECT]
[TEAM 2/3 NAME], what was your response? [READ TEAM 2/3 RESPONSE].
[IF CORRECT]
And you got it! Let's see your wager... [TEAM 2/3 WAGER]. That brings you to [NEW SCORE].
[IF INCORRECT, SAY] No, I'm sorry. That's not it. And what will it cost you? [TEAM 1 WAGER]. That brings you down to [NEW SCORE].
[IF NO TEAM WAS CORRECT]
That was a stumper. The correct response was... [CORRECT RESPONSE INCLUDING WHAT IS/WHO IS].
[IF TEAM HAS MORE THAN 2X SECOND PLACE POINTS AND THEY ARE WRONG]
You had a commanding lead coming into Final Jeopardy! Let's see your response...[READ RESPONSE]. No, that's not it. But how much did you wager...
[IF LESS THAN THE DIFFERENCE, SAY]
[WAGER]. That will keep you in 1st place. [Skip to final results]
[IF MORE THAN THE DIFFERENCE, SAY]
Oh no. [WAGER]. That's going to knock you out of the lead. [Skip to final results]
Remember, one of the three teams on the main display will be the winner. This will make it easier to call out the winning team.
The first time you click Show Winner Screen, the Opcon will tell you which team was the winner without displaying it to players. The second time, the game will display "Tonight's Champion" with the winning team's name and their total score:
[WINNING TEAM NAME], you are our Jeopardy! Bar League campion for tonight! Stick around to claim your prize.
Click Show Final Leaderboard to see the other winners, and say:
And [2nd PLACE TEAM], you came in 2nd place, so you can come up for a prize as well.
The next steps are thank yous and reminders: Thank the venue, remind players to tip, remind them to come back next week, and ask players to check a quick survey on their phones. Click Show Thanks for Playing, and say:
I want to thank [VENUE] for having us tonight. Let's give a round of applause for our servers tonight, and even better, leave them a good tip! You'll also see a link on your phones for a short survey to tell us how we did. We appreciate any and all feedback.
Come back next week for more Jeopardy! Bar League. Follow us on the socials at Jeopardy. Thank you for playing! Get home safe, and goodnight!
You will not have to do any tiebreakers. If two teams have the same amount of points, the tie is broken by the computer based on which team had more aggregate fastest correct responses over the course of the game.
Did you know that QMs used to have to do a whole-ass, multi-paragraph blog after every quiz? It's true. Uphill, in the snow, both ways, and within 24 hours of the quiz start time.
These days, your only post-quiz requirement is the event report which consists of scores and, yes, team pictures. This little section will break down some best practices for taking team pictures during your quiz.
Why are they required? Simply put, they go up on geekswhodrink.com and are supposed to help promote your quiz by showing off how fun it is. So don't take or post crappy pictures.
If you have a quiz with a modest but steady team count of 10 or fewer teams, you should have time to try and hit all of your teams up for a picture.
If your quiz is 20+ teams, try and get a healthy sampling of 7-10 teams.
If you have a dog-friendly quiz and you're a dog-friendly person, take some dog pics. Those are always popular.
DO NOT just take crowd shots from where you're hosting.
DO NOT just take pics of the top two teams.
Remember, the pictures are supposed to help promote your quiz by showing off how fun it is.
We recommend taking pictures during any of the breaks throughout the game.
Mix it up. The person writing this hosts an outdoor quiz. I'll take pics of some of my regulars before the quiz while the lighting is still pretty good. Other techniques that work pretty great:
Take pictures of bonus prize winners
Get pictures of the winning teams with their prizes
If you host in a small space, take a pic or two in between questions while you're hosting. This works especially well for SBT and DNB quizzes
Yes! (Sorry, old timey hosts with actual cameras. Phones have come a long way.)
Always ask before taking a picture!
Some people don't want their picture taken. Respect that. It doesn't hurt to announce before coming around to take team pictures, e.g. "During the break, I'll come around and take team pictures. They will appear, with your scores, tomorrow on geekswhodrink-dot-com. Please let me know if you don't want me to take your picture.
Keep your file sizes 1.2 MB or smaller
If your file sizes are too large, you can run into issues uploading them to your event report.
Two easy fixes:
1. Email them to yourself and re-size them in the process.
2. Change your phone's settings to take photos at a smaller file size so you don't have to mess around with re-sizing.
Pay attention to file type!
OYQ currently only accepts JPG and PNG files
Yes, HEIC is a dope format. OYQ will accept it eventually but does not currently (as of March 14, 2023).
Take your pictures in landscape!
If you take pictures in portrait on most phones, they will flip on their side when you upload them to OYQ.
Watch out for lighting. Bars tend to be dark.
Check your phone's settings for a "night" setting. Take pictures before it gets dark. Use a flash. You may have to play around with this a bit but these are pretty solid tips on how to make sure your pictures don't look like you have a bunch of Cheshire Cats playing your quiz.
Double check your pictures after you press save and publish.
Are they on their side? Are they upside down? Are they blurry as hell? Are they just plain bad? Unpublish the report, adjust or scrap the bad photos, and republish. We can't emphasize this enough: The pictures are supposed to help promote your quiz by showing off how fun it is. The bar owners and taproom managers look at our website and if they see a bunch of cruddy or missing photos, that's not a great look.
