Stewardship: Braiding Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Environmental Citizenship
The focus of our inquiry this year is to discover our role as stewards of the land by braiding together traditional ecological knowledge and environmental citizenship and sustainability practices. Our learning is guided by the Secwepemc calendar and cross-curricular assignments that anchor our collective classroom work, our art and creativity, as well as our field trips and experiential learning opportunities in Science 9-12, English 11/12, Contemporary Indigenous Studies 12, Career Exploration 12 and Outdoor Education 11/12.
How is taking care of the earth taking care of ourselves?
How do individual actions impact local change?
What is the essential relationship between humans, water and salmon?
What do the moons teach us about traditional ways of life?
Four Directions Secondary would like to acknowledge and thank Jackie Jules, Cultural Educator and Knowledge Keeper, for her incredible support and dedication to the Stewardship theme. Her ability to connect with the students, share her incredible wealth of knowledge of Secwepemc culture, and deep connection to the land have been a true example of Stewardship.
