Welcome to the 2025–2026 School Year!
We are off to a great start, and I’m excited to partner with you as your Transition Specialist. My role is to support GCISD students and families as they plan and prepare for life after high school.
Each month, I’ll be sending this newsletter with updates, resources, and opportunities related to:
Special education and transition services
Employment and job readiness
Postsecondary education options
Helpful tools, webinars, and family trainings
For families with younger students, you may be wondering what “transition” means. Transition planning in GCISD begins in 7th grade, but it’s never too early to learn about the process. I encourage you to explore Navigate Life Texas for a clear explanation of transition and steps you can take to get started.
The earlier families begin asking questions and learning about available supports, the smoother the journey will be. Please know I am here to guide you and your student through each step.
If you’d like more information on life after graduation, Medicaid waivers, community agencies, college programs, self-determination, or independent living, don’t hesitate to reach out. My contact information can be found at the bottom of this newsletter.
Save The Date
We’d love for you to join us on this evening for an informative session designed to support you and your student. We’ll be sharing important information about:
MHMR Services
Medicaid Waivers
Student Accessibility Resources at TCC
This is a great opportunity to learn about resources that can make a real difference for your family. We hope to see you there!
Child care will be provided. Please scan the QR Code or click here to register and sign up for child care.
Mark your calendars for GCISD’s College & Career Night from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, September 25, at Grapevine High School. In addition to connecting with colleges, military and technical school representatives, GCISD counselors will also hold presentations about completing the federal financial aid form.

Self Determination Skills - The Texas Education Agency (TEA) and statewide support networks emphasize the importance of building self-advocacy, decision-making, and goal-setting skills. These skills help students become more independent as they prepare for college, careers, and adult life.
The links provided include the College and Career Readiness Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), that closely align with teaching self-determination and decision-making skills to students with disabilities. Reviewing the TEKS is a great way to see your student’s progress and how they are working toward their postsecondary goals.
