Navigating the world after high school can be a challenge for students with disabilities and their families. To help make things a little easier, we've put together a quick guide based on the Texas Transition & Employment Guide. This guide is often overlooked, but it is a tremendous resource to help you and your student plan for a successful future!
Planning for your student's future starts early and is a team effort. The guide explains how to use your student’s Individualized Education Program to set goals for what they want to do after high school. This includes thinking about careers, further education, and independent living.
Key Areas to Plan For
The guide breaks down planning into easy-to-understand sections:
Your Rights: Did you know that when your student turns 18, their legal rights transfer to them? The guide has information on what this means and how to prepare, including a useful option called the Supported Decision-Making Agreement, which can be an alternative to guardianship.
Careers & College: Whether your student is thinking about a job, a trade school, or college, this section helps you plan for it. It includes tips on which classes to take and what questions to ask at schools or job training programs.
Life Skills: This part covers important topics like:
Community: Finding support for living on their own and getting involved in their community.
Transportation: Figuring out how to get around, from public transit to driver training programs like the Texas Driving with Disability initiative.
Finances: Information on managing money and finding financial help, like Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Health: Tips for managing health as an adult and talking to doctors. Medicaid Waivers List
Finding Help: The guide provides a list of agencies and contacts to help you connect with the right resources. You can also talk to me. I am the Transition and Employment Services Designee (TED) for GCISD. I am here to help you find the information you need and assist you with planning for the future.
