I hope you all enjoy seeing the wonderful things your student is doing in GT LEAD!
First grade did a fun Monster Mash Up activity to kick off the month of October and have started our next unit, Authentic Research. Students will learn new vocabulary including hypothesis, descriptive research, sample, data, and impact. They will learn about systematic sampling and its importance. Students will brainstorm questions and evaluate ideas using a rubric as they learn about research and the impact it can have on a school or community. At the end of the unit, students should be able to clearly communicate their research findings and potential impact.
We had a BLAST learning about systems, how students can start the next unit, Simple Machines. Students will research types of simple machines. They will analyze cause and effect relationships. Student will finally design a system of simple machines.
Third grade finished up the adventure of Flight! We are now starting 3D Discoveries! In this unit students will get to demonstrate their strengths in building and writing. They will use tolerance for ambiguity to look at something in a different way.
Students will produce and analyze convergent questions to answer a problem. They will use fluency, flexibility, originality and elaboration when creating a product. Lastly, students will use presentation skills to share my thoughts.
After Fourth Grade finished Monument of Me they created amazing Food Puns! Now we are diving into my favorite unit, "Detective School!" Students will learn new vocabulary including suspect, motive, alabi, evidence. They will learn and analyze the different the types of evidence. Students will use deductive reasoning as they work in teams to search for evidence, suspects, motives, and alibis to solve difference cases!
I hope that fifth graders continue to work towards meeting their SMART goals set in class! We are now diving into Geometric wonders! Students will identify that tessellations show the arrangement of shapes that fit together in a repeated pattern, without gaps or overlapping. They will create 3 different types of tessellations, transitional, reflection and rotation. They will Understand that finding the sum of two preceding numbers in a series creates the Fibonacci Sequence and that this ratio is evident in nature and mathematics. They will create their own masterpiece using the Fibonacci Sequence. Students will observe that fractals are never ending patterns that exist in nature, mathematics, science and art.
On Wednesday, December 6, 2023, 5th grade GT LEAD students will take a field trip to the Dallas Museum of Illusions to experience unimaginable optical illusions and geometry in their boldest form. LEADers have been participating in a Geometric Wonders Unit, and this field trip will bring lots of those learning experiences to life. LEADers will also enjoy a picnic lunch at West End Park, while completing an optical illusion and problem-solving journal.
This trip will take place from 8:45 am-1:15 pm. Buses will pick up and return students from our campus. Students will need to bring a sack disposable lunch with a drink, as we will eat before returning back to school. Dress in an SLE shirt and appropriately for the weather, please.
The cost of the trip is $20.00. Cash only. Deadline to turn in money is November 15, 2023.
Please fill out the forms in this packet and return to your campus GT LEAD specialist.
We will have our next experience Dec. 4-8. I am in need of parent volunteer's to decorate my door/hall by Friday, Dec. 1. Whoever volunteers needs to have a 2023-2024 cleared background check through GCISD. An email was sent with some of the designs I am looking for. If you are interested in helping, please let me know and I can get whatever supplies you need ordered.
The GT Challenge will continue! I will continue to send home weekly math puzzles! If students complete the puzzles correctly they can get something out of my prize box! With that being said, I teach 6 grade levels and will need to replenish my prize box often! If you would like to donate anything to my prize box, my students and I would greatly appreciate it! I have added some ideas to my wishlist, however you can also choose items your student(s) would work towards!
Your student is already in the GT program and they DO NOT to be reassessed, they will continue the GT program throughout their schooling in GCISD. However, if you are interested in your student testing for the ASPIRE Academy the referral window will be Nov. 27-Dec. 15. We will not accept referrals after December 15. You can find more information about the ASPIRE Academy here. You will complete the Parent Permission to Test in Skyward (English and Spanish Directions). This form will open Nov. 27.

When parenting a gifted/talented child, it is important to factor in the social/emotional well-being, as well as to look ahead and plan down the road several years. I am here to advocate for your children, as well as to be a resource for you to other opportunities within our district. One way you can stay connected and advocate for your child is through SAGE (Supporting and Advocating for Gifted Education), our parent advocacy group for gifted learners. They often bring in guest speakers, invite representatives for camps/programs to share, and provide scholarships for teachers to attend gifted conferences. Please consider joining this dynamic group by clicking on the link below.
