In the context of my resource teacher, her voice is loud enough to be heard at the back of the classroom while also adapting in volume and tone based on the classroom context and necessity. This ability to adjust effectively captures students' attention and creates a dynamic quality that commands their focus subconsciously. As a result, learners become captivated and engaged, positively influencing classroom instruction and promoting a more responsive learning environment.
On the other hand, her punctuality affects classroom discipline on a subconscious level by establishing a professional demeanor and demonstrating respect for students' time and learning. Consistent punctuality and adherence to rules promote a sense of responsibility and expectation among students, signaling that she values the schedule and is committed to their learning experience. Conversely, a lack of punctuality can undermine this dynamic, which may potentially lead to decreased respect for authority and an increased likelihood of disruptive behavior, as students may feel less accountable for their own punctuality and conduct. She, therefore, serves as a model for behavior, influencing students' attitudes and actions through her example, reinforcing the importance of discipline in the classroom.
Meanwhile, we need to check on the physical aspects of classroom management because various factors within this environment can significantly influence students' well-being and learning experiences. Elements such as seating arrangements, proper lighting, and organized spaces, to name a few, provide a learning environment in ways that may cater to diverse needs. I also believe that these physical aspects also affect students on a subconscious level, as they communicate certain messages about expectations, school's values and standards, guiding students in understanding what is required of them and making them feel secured.
Effective classroom management is the foundation for a successful learning environment because it’s not just about delivering lessons; it’s about creating an atmosphere where students feel safe, respected, and engaged. As a future teacher, I recognize that managing my behavior—being organized, punctual, and setting clear expectations—sets the tone for my classroom and models the behavior I expect from students. A well-structured physical environment further enhances focus and minimizes distractions. By establishing clear rules, consistent consequences, and fostering collaboration, I can create a supportive space where students can thrive. Without effective management, even the best instruction cannot reach its full potential.
To ensure effective classroom management, I plan to be a role model by being punctual, organized, and consistent in my actions. I aim to create a learning environment that promotes cooperation and comfort through varied student activities, such as dyads, group tasks, and individual work, while conducting interviews and assessments to understand students' needs, strengths, and areas for improvement. This will allow me to modify my teaching strategies based on their context and provide relevant resources.
Additionally, I intend to use non-verbal communication to manage behavior through positive or negative reinforcement, depending on the situation. I will also apply non-violent communication when addressing conflicts, focusing on understanding and resolving issues without resorting to punitive measures. On the other hand, instead of traditional seating arrangement, I plan to use a U-shaped arrangement to encourage collaboration and make students feel comfortable. My approach avoids rigid rules, as I aim to create a safe and open learning environment. I will also assign open-ended projects, continuously engage students, encourage peer teaching, and promote transparency, accountability, and student initiative.
My resource teacher used a combination of personal and classroom management strategies, totaling eleven, which helped create a respectful and collaborative learning environment. Her attention to professionalism and non-verbal communication, along with promoting student initiative and positive reinforcements, encouraged students' responsibility, motivation, and engagement. By avoiding collective punishment and offering praise, she promoted fairness and positive behavior, contributing to effective classroom management.
I also believe my resource teacher applied various strategies effectively, but due to the limited time I had for observation, I may have missed opportunities to see others in action. For example, I wasn't able to observe strategies like interviewing students to assess their needs, addressing misbehavior promptly, considering peer teaching, assigning open-ended projects, or modeling appropriate behavior in different situations.
In reflecting on my teaching principle, I realize that my core belief centers on creating a learning environment where students feel safe, respected, and engaged. I strongly value open communication and non-punitive approaches to discipline, all the while developing responsible and disciplined students who value accountability. I can also guide them through positive reinforcement and constructive dialogue, ensuring they feel supported while developing a sense of responsibility for their learning.
