GIS DRAGONS SPECTACULAR 2023 MSSWPKL

GIS took part in the yearly MSSWPKL Swimming event, which took place in the National Swimming Pools at Bukit Jalil on the 25th and 26th of July.

Despite the summer break, and off-season for many of our swimmers, GIS completed an awesome event with new personal bests and some Meet Records broken by our team members.

Even though the final team results have not been released we are quite certain that we became overall winners. Masato Fujimoto (7-12 years) and Kellyn Choong (16-18 years) were awarded the MVS (most valuable swimmer) trophy in their age groups and gender.

7th Novice Swim Meet, Max Tang achievements and NAE Invitational at BSKL 17th-18th June 2023

Successful Novice Swim Meet for our Dragons’ swimmers

Our GIS Dragons’ swimmers attended the 7th Novice Swim Meet at Pusat Akuatik Darul Ehsan, where they competed for two days with other swim clubs in Malaysia. GIS swimmers faced the challenge of heatwave restriction which meant they were unable to do more training sessions as usual. However, some of the younger age group swimmers manage to overcome the challenge to wake up early in the morning for 6am training sessions at schools.

We won a total of 38 medals. 15 Gold, 14 Silver, 9 Bronze. A huge congratulations for Amanda Koek Gelacio and Adrienne Tjang for winning all of their events.

Once again, we extend our warmest thanks to all swimmers, parents, and coaches for making this meet a success. We hope GIS swimmers enjoyed themselves, had a rewarding experience and made a lot of new friends along the way.

Max Tang shone in Novice

The Novice meet was a very long 2 days swim meet, as there were 1600+ swimmers! Max’ performance at the Novice meet over at Pade, Shah Alam was absolutely amazing, managing to win 7 medals in total - 5 Golds, 1 Silver, 1 Bronzeand was the overall top scorer boy in the 12-year-old boys' age category. He also achieved all new PBs across all 8 of his events as follows:

25 Free 13.27

25 Back 16.16

25 Fly 14.44

50 Free 28.50

50 Back 34.02

50 Fly 32.48

50 Breast 38.00

NAE Invitational BSKL swim meet

Following the news from MoE lifting up restrictions we managed to enter with 11 swimmers to the North Anglia Schools swim meet organised at BSKL.

Our swimmers collected a big number of medals and did a great job despite the fact most of them took a training off week due to the Discovery Week.

It was a well organised meet with the participation of British International School of Dubai and Kuwait, Epsom Malaysia, Prince of Wales from Penang, BSKL and GIS. We are looking to participate again next year with the full team.

GIS obtains 3rd place in boys at SEASAC Junior Swimming

The extremely hot and humid Friday and Saturday in Bangkok did not help to perform at a high level but our Dragons' swimmers faced adversity and achieved numerous personal bests. Led by the 11-12's boys ( Max Tang, Masato Fujimoto, Chee Wai Lim, E-An Lee and Yeonwoo Park), GIS concluded 3rd overall in boys category, we were the winners in the 11-12 boys, we broke 3 relay records in the 11-12 boys and conquered 2nd and 3rd maximum point scorers in the 11-12 boys with Chee Wai  Lim and Masato Fujimoto.

GIS added three new records in the relays to the 11-12 boys category in SEASAC junior, which makes 8 in total to date with Tobin Sia individual records achieved in the 2019 edition.

The new records are

-4x100m 11-12 Boys Medley Relay 4:44.64

-4x50m 11-12 Boys Freestyle Relay 1:54.89

-4x50m 11-12 Boys Medley Relay 2:09.75

GIS Swimmers obtained 19 individual medals (5 Gold, 10 Silver and 4 Bronze) and 5 Relays medals (4 events Gold and 1 Silver).

Congratulations to all Dragons swimmers for their achievement and personal bests.

Kobus Elbers finishes in second place in IroKids Vietnam.

Kobus explains his experience; “Iron-kids was very fun, and very very hot. I really enjoyed it and I would definitely do it again. There was a very strong current in the swim but I managed to get out of the water first overall. After that I was running at a good pace but I got overtaken by another athlete. The whole race was nice until the end when I was running in a heat of 43 degrees. I couldn’t catch up to first place. At the end I finished with a time of 23:45 minutes. And got second overall…”

II Flying Dragons Aquathlon 29th April 2023

GIS students shone last Saturday in a very competitive second edition Flying Dragons Aquathlon, covering between 200 and 400 meters swimming and 1.2Km and 1.8Km Running.

Our students gave it all in both disciplines with very good splits and the final results brought new records on the distance for the Y 9-10 Boys with Zahn Yang, Y 7-8 Boys under Jacob Nides and Y 3-4 for Colin Wong. The other two records broken were Y 5-6 Girls with Jessie Zhang and Y 3-4 Girls with Adrienne Tjang.

All the results for this year are available here

FOBISIA Invitational Swimming (Bangkok Patana School, Thailand) 27th-29th January 2023

GIS participated in FOBISIA Swimming Invitational in Bangkok Patana School with 42 swimmers in a massive event with 750 participants from 24 different international schools representing 5 countries from Asia (Bangladesh, Thailand, Brunei, Philippines and Malaysia). The annual swim meet held swimmers from 9 to 18 years of age with very high level athletes.

GIS did a great job finishing 11th overall and taking the first place in Boys 11-12 category.

Since it was an open event the number of swimmers represented per school was different which makes it difficult to set the real position in equal conditions, however GIS managed to bring a good number of medals. Our MVS’s (most valuable swimmers) in points contribution and medals were Masato Fujimoto (53 points and 8 medals), Lee Sze NG (35.5 points and 2 medals), Chee Wai Lim (30 points and 3 medals), Yeonwoo Park (28 points and 4 medals), Lynn Chiew (21 points and 1 medal) and E-An Lee (20 points and 2 medals).

It was remarkable the big effort in three tiring days from all the swimmers that improved most of their personal best in the long course swimming pool, enjoying and getting a good experience from this international competition.

AIMS Secondary Swimming. Alice Smith School 31st January 2023

Last Tuesday, and almost without resting time after FOBISIA, it was held the AIMS Secondary Swimming competition, where GIS stands in the top Kuala Lumpur International Schools group.

During Tuesday morning our secondary swimmers, grouped in 11-12, 13-14 and 15 and over age groups swam 5 events each in a very competitive event.

GIS attended with 44 over a maximum of 48 swimmers allowed to participate, due to some last minute withdrawals for healthy issues. However, GIS topped most of the events age group and gender podiums. Not many new personal bests due to the exhaustion of some of our athletes who just came back from Bangkok representing GIS in FOBISIA Swimming, but a real great effort from all of them.

GIS ended as the new Kuala Lumpur AIMS Champion overall, securing at the same time 11-12, 15 and over boys and 15 and over girls first place, and top three for the other age groups and genders.

Next year the aim is to obtain the same results with Primary and defend our title.

MILO/PRAKL Age Group Swimming Championship 6th-8th January 2023

Garden International School took part in the latest PRAKL Age Group Swimming competition held in the National Aquatic Center in Bukit Jalil. 52 swimmers represented GIS in the meet during the three days. Many swimmers established new personal bests and registered new marks in the long course swimming pool during the meet.

GIS finished 5th among all the participants’ clubs and schools in the medals table.

Highlight the qualifying for the NAG for Finlay Kay in the 1500m and the selection of Ivan Choong in the Kuala Lumpur state team for the upcoming Malaysia Open Swimming Championships.

Masato at President Cup

Impressive performance from Masato in the President Cup, held in Ipoh last December 9th-11th. Mark has brought back 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze from 39th National Inter-Club President Cup 2022 held on 9-11 December 2022.  He was also honoured to be selected in the President Cup Boys (Mixed Age Group) 4x100M Freestyle Relay Team, with only one top swimmer from each age category in each club represented.   Like all other major swimming competitions, he had strong competitors from other states.  It was great to see Masato fight beyond his personal best against high level swimming.

Dan in Royal Selangor Golf Club Swim Meet

Last Sunday, Dan (Water Dragons) joined RSGC swimming gala. He joined all of the U8 events offered ie 50m Free, Fly, Back and Breast. He won some nice medals for all the events - something to motivate, boost his confidence and encourage him to love the sport more.

Awesome performance! Congratulations Dan!

His timing was (50m):

Breast: 1.13 (bronze)

Fly: 59 (bronze)

Free: 47 (silver - missed by 1 second to the gold medalist)

Back: 1.02 (bronze)

SuperSprint Triathlon Kenanga Finale Melaka 27th November

Jacob Nides representing GIS did an amazing job in the supersprint distance finishing in 4th place overall in the 11-14 age group category.

The event consisted of a 300m swim followed by 9 km Cycling and 2 Km Run, where Jacob managed to complete it in 37 minutes and 33 seconds.

Our passionate triathlete is making a big wave into the sport.

Friendly KLASS vs GIS Water Polo 5vs5 Mini Tournament 17th November

GIS Water Polo Dragons managed to play water polo again after more than three years last tournament. A totally new water polo team initiated their first steps in the sport with a 5vs5 mini tournament against KLASS.

The fixtures were set up in 6 minute games with a total of 6 teams, 3 from each school where our Dragons managed to win some games and enjoy the experience.

Next goals are some friendly fixtures in term 2 plus Selangor Water Polo Invitational Tournament.

KLASS Invitational Swim Meet. 9th November Alice Smith

GIS took part with a selection of swimmers from year 3 to 6 in KLASS Invitational Swim Meet along with other Malaysian schools like ISKL, ISP, Taylors, Tenby, BSKL.

It was a great first experience for many of our young swimmers to explore their new marks in the long course swimming pool, and surprisingly many managed to beat their best marks in the short course. Absolutely amazing achievement!

Garden finished third overall behind KLASS and ISP and in front of ISKL and BSKL.

Girls achieved third place overall and boys fourth place in a very competitive swim meet.

Next move for our small Dragons is to get ready for PRAKL happening during the first weekend of January 2023.

GIS at Ironman Langkawi

Our community is taking part in every triathlon related event in Malaysia, and of course we could not miss the biggest one happening. Tobias, Kobus and Jonas Elbers, dad included, completed the Ironkids Aquathlon and Ironman over the weekend with some podium positions.

Friendly Swim Meets

Dragons Swimming squads are back on track with a very busy agenda: plenty of swimming meets with the aim of getting swimmers ready for the major events of the season.

During this term GIS Dragons have faced friendly swim meets versus St Joseph International School, British International School and International School of Kuala Lumpur, and until end of term will have a chance to swim versus Alice Smith KLASS Torpedoes and other schools in the KLASS Invitational Swim Meet to be held on the 9th November.

Primary and Secondary Swimming Squads keep improving their best marks and getting ready for AIMS (January), FOBISIA Invitational Swimming Championship (January), PRAKL (TBC), SEASAC (Feb and May), and our Early Fire Swim Meet on the 11th-12th February.

NOVICE SWIM MEET (15th-16th October)

Awesome achievement for GIS in NOVICE Swim Meet happened last 15th-16th October where some of our swimmers topped up the podium in all their events with 6 gold medals each for Cairistiona Wong, Ivan Choong and Kok Joe Thon. Special mention to our young Samuel Kok Gelacio with 3 bronze and 1 silver medal and Jessie Zhang with another bronze.

Garden International School finished second overall in the medal count.

MSSWPKL 2022. 2nd-3rd August

Congratulations to all GIS Dragons participants in this year MSSWPKL.

GIS swimmers did a great job even during their summer break and managed to achieve podiums in many events, but most importantly we could see very good improvements reflected in their marks.

Thanks to Coach Eileen and Coach Yi Ting for conducting the Swimming Camp Training during the summer break and getting most of Dragon's swimmers ready for the swim meet.

Here you can check results and medals.
