Garden Nursery School

Our updates concerning COVID-19

During this pandemic, Garden Nursery School has closed until we receive further word from our state representatives on when schools can reopen. Like many other schools, we are trying many different ways to help keep our children and families connected by creating stimulating curriculum via YouTube for children to watch at their leisure and through Zoom where we can converse in smaller groups and have large group dance parties! Being an emergent focused school with a strong emphasis on social and emotional development, this is very new territory for us. We remain mindful and present as we excitedly wait to return to our beloved school.

If you are a family who is interested in learning more about our school, please contact us by emailing either admissions@gardennurseryschool.org or office@gardennurseryschool.org and we would be happy to arrange a conversation on the phone or via Zoom to answer any questions.

Cambridge's Most Flexible Cooperative Preschool... Since 1959!

Garden Nursery School is a parent and teacher run cooperative preschool located in Harvard Square in Cambridge. For more than half a century, Garden Nursery School has offered a nurturing and stimulating environment for children and their families.

We are excited to move into a fully-integrated structure that provides the possibility of a five-day program while preserving the option of a part-time program that has been the cornerstone of GNS for nearly 60 years. 2018-2019 brought the first stage of our new model. Children 2.9 - 5 years attended on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while our 3- and 5-day programs were offered for a slightly older cohort, ages 3.9-5 years. It was a fantastic inaugural year, and we are excited to roll out in full swing this September, 2019. All 2019-2020 programs (2-day, 3-day, 5-day) are open to children ages 2.9-5 years.

The school was founded on the belief that active parental involvement helps establish community and that this, in turn, naturally eases the transition for children as they make their way in their new school environment. GNS parents describe additional benefits as well, including the focused time to share with their child at school, understanding their child better as a learner and leaving GNS well-positioned to partner with their child's teachers for many years to come.

GNS offers early drop-off, extended day, and a media/marketing-free environment. We invite you to learn more about our cooperative, and the unique experience we offer. Schedule a tour and come visit us today!

Co-operative Participation and Community Building

Garden Nursery School is run together by parents and three staff members. Parents work alongside the teachers and program director to ensure school functioning. They help in the classroom, assist in maintaining the space, organize Open Houses and admissions, welcome new families and are a majority on the GNS Board.

GNS strongly believes that active parental involvement helps establish community and that this, in turn, naturally eases the transition for children as they make their way in their new school environment.
