Cambridge's Only All Part-time Cooperative Preschool... Since 1959!
Garden Nursery School is a parent and teacher run cooperative preschool located in Harvard Square in Cambridge. For half a century, Garden Nursery School has offered a nurturing and stimulating environment for children and their families.
By design, GNS is a part-time preschool - the only one of its kind in Cambridge. GNS offers early drop-off, extended day, and a media/marketing-free environment.
The school was founded on the belief that active parental involvement helps establish community and that this, in turn, naturally eases the transition for children as they make their way in their new school environment.
We invite you to learn more about our cooperative, and the unique experience we offer. Schedule a tour and come visit us today!
Our Philosophy at GNS
We believe that each child is unique, full of potential and continually evolving. Our school aims to provide a safe, stimulating and nurturing early school experience. We respect the different perspectives, experiences and dignity of each child and family.
Garden Nursery School is a safe, vibrant, and nurturing first school experience. As a community, we strive to honor differences and provide a model of cooperation and respect for all children and families.
Life at GNS
Through an emergent curriculum that emphasizes learning through play, our students discover the world around them, explore their creativity and imagination and build upon their confidence and social skills.
Play and social-emotional development are the heart of the curriculum, and the day is designed to provide a combination of structured activities and self-directed play.
Our outstanding teachers tailor activities to the interests and needs of individual students. Our materials and curriculum reflect our appreciation for human diversity; they honor the multiplicity of family structures and the economic, racial, and religious differences in our community.
Age Groupings and Class Schedule: 3's and 4's
Garden Nursery School is open to children ages 2.9 to 5 years old. Our school is welcoming to families of any race, religion, cultural heritage, political belief, national origin, ability, sexual orientation and family configuration.
- 3's class meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
- 4's class meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
- Additional options include 8:30-9:00 am Early Bird drop-off as well as 1:00-3:00 pm Extended Day.
GNS follows the same school year and holiday calendar as the City of Cambridge public schools.
Co-operative Participation and Community Building
Garden Nursery School is run together by parents and two staff members. Parents work alongside staff to ensure school functioning - they help in the classroom, assist in maintaining the space, organize Open Houses and admissions, welcome new families and are a majority on the GNS Board.
GNS strongly believes that active parental involvement helps establish community and that this, in turn, naturally eases the transition for children as they make their way in their new school environment.
Enrolling in GNS
Applications for the remaining spots for the 2017-2018 school year are currently open and will be processed in the order in which they are received. As part of the enrollment process, families are highly encouraged to take a tour of our school or attend our next available Open House.
We welcome all applicants who are the appropriate age.
