Nature of the Subject
This course offers students the opportunity to read a wide range of language and enables them to enjoy and appreciate a variety of texts, such as fiction and non fiction. It will also enable them to read critically and use knowledge gained from a wide range of reading sources to inform and improve their own writing. They will work with information and ideas in language by developing skills of evaluation, analysis and inference. The course will assist in their development of vocabulary and the three pieces of coursework involved in the assessment of the course, will aid their ability to write for a range of purposes: to describe, to create a narrative and to respond to a non fiction article.
Syllabus & Content
The students will spend a considerable amount of time creating a coursework portfolio comprised of three different tasks:
One descriptive, one a narrative and the final a response to an article.
The time spent on the Language coursework will be balanced alongside practising skills required for the Language Paper and equally their commitments to the Literature content, which is fairly demanding.
Assessment
Students will sit the Language examination Paper 1: Reading. This is a 2 hour paper and equates to 50% of the English Language final grade.
The other 50% is made up of the three assignments required for the Language portfolio, thus totalling 100% of their final English Language mark.
Teacher Introduction
The course is developed to introduce students to a wide range of different formats for writing and to help develop written and reading skills and to challenge students in these areas. The course aids in creating well rounded students of English Language and the final Paper 1 Reading paper highlights a student's ability to address comprehension, analysis of the writer's effect and writing in a variety of formats.
