Nature of the Subject
AS & A Level Music encourages music students to study a variety of music and build on their individual interests. Students develop their ability to make connections between the musical activities of listening,
composing and performing. They will make in-depth studies of set works and also learn from a variety of more modern genres and of music from around the world.
Syllabus & Content
AS Level
Listening
• A wide range of music including Folk, Jazz, Pop and World music
• 2 set works from the Baroque period and 3 from other musical periods.
Performance & Composition
• Performance lasting 6-10 minutes
• Two contrasting compositions, 1-2 minutes each.
Year 13 Students choose 2 of the following components:
Extended Performance
• Performance lasting 15-20 minutes
• 1000-1500 word research report.
Extended Composition
• Composition lasting 6-8 minutes
• 1000-1500 word research report.
Investigating Music
• 2500-3000 word essay
• 500 word self-reflective statement
Assessment
AS Level
Listening Exam Paper 30%
Students will sit a 2 hour listening paper based on the Listening component of the course.
Performance & Composition (Coursework) 20%
Submitted as recordings and sheet music.
A Level (All coursework) 50%
Students choose 2 components:
- Extended Performance 25%
- Extended Composition 25%
- Investigating Music 25%"
Teacher Introduction
By furthering students knowledge of other musicians and composers from different musical periods and their techniques, students will not only be further improving their analytical performance and compositional skills, but they will also be developing their confidence, discipline and creativity thus broadening the spectrum with which they can communicate expression through musicianship.
