Design Technology
Nature of the Subject
This course offers students the opportunity to develop creative thinking in areas relevant to design and technology, and apply problem-solving skills to practical and technological problems.
It will also enable them to develop the communication skills central to design, realisation and evaluation and gain knowledge and understanding of design and technology.
They will develop skills in research and investigation design and make products by taking into consideration sustainability and the wider impact on society and develop their ability to make aesthetic, economic, ethical and technical value judgements.
Syllabus & Content
Students will revisit and develop their previous graphics skills leading to a mini design and make project; ‘Mini Soma Puzzle’.
Students will then begin their final major project in Year 10 with a focus on one of the following briefs; design and make various items for an activity pack to keep young people entertained on long journeys or design and make various promotional material for an animated feature length film of your choice.
Assessment
At the end of the two year course, all students will sit the examinations.
Paper 1: Product Design. This is a 1 hour 15 minute paper and equates to 25% of the Design Technology final grade.
Paper 5: Graphic Products. This is a 1 hour paper and equates to a further 25%.
The other 50% is made up of the coursework for the final design and make project.
Teacher Introduction
By studying IGCSE Design Technology, students will be able to develop their creativity, problem solving, planning, and evaluation skills, the subject is purposeful, as well as being fun and exciting!
Studying Design Technology provides excellent opportunities for students to develop and apply value judgements of an aesthetic, economic, moral, social, and technical nature both in their own designing and when evaluating the work of others.
It also helps and allows students to have the freedom to create innovative designs, understand how things work and the materials used.
