To improve outcomes for all students, Ontario’s Minister of Education has implemented a de-streamed math course for all Grade 9 students.
GRADE 9 OPTIONS: MTH1W1, MAT1L (Locally Developed/Essentials)
GRADE 10 OPTIONS: MPM2D (Academic), MPM2DG (Gifted), MAT2L (Locally Developed/Essentials), MFM2P (Applied)
Students may benefit from a self-evaluation and review of the following expectations. The questions in this self-assessment reflect some of the key ideas learned in prerequisite courses. They do not represent the problem-solving approach or the rich experience that students would be exposed to in a classroom. The intention is for students to revisit some key concepts and, if needed, access review materials in an informal environment at a pace that is comfortable for the student.

Additional resources are available on Ontario's Learn at home: Grades 9 to 12 website to help students prepare for next-level courses. Here you will find courses and resources to refresh your learnings from this and help students succeed in the compulsory and pre-requisite courses in the fall.
If students and families are uncertain about which math course is best for them, please speak to the current math teacher and book an appointment with a Guidance Counsellor. Students may get a better idea of which course is a good fit by considering the questions below.

GRADE 9
GRADE 9 ESSENTIALS MATH (MAT1L) - LDCC
· I need to review mathematical skills from previous grades.
· My grade 8 teacher recommended me for this course - MUST BE RECOMMENDED.
GRADE 9 DESTREAMED MATH (MTH1W)
· This course enables students to consolidate, and continue to develop, an understanding of mathematical concepts related to number sense and operations, algebra, measurement, geometry, data, probability, and financial literacy. Students will use mathematical processes, mathematical modelling, and coding to make sense of the mathematics they are learning and to apply their understanding to culturally responsive and relevant real-world situations. Students will continue to enhance their mathematical reasoning skills, including proportional reasoning, spatial reasoning, and algebraic reasoning, as they solve problems and communicate their thinking.

GRADE 10
GRADE 10 ESSENTIALS (MAT2L) - LDCC
· I have a grade 9 math credit.
· My grade 9 teacher recommended me for this course - MUST BE RECOMMENDED.
· I learn best when math is hands-on and the topics deal with real everyday concepts.
· I plan to go directly into the workplace, into an apprenticeship, or to college or university for a non-math related program.
GRADE 10 APPLIED (MFM2P)
· I have a credit in grade 9 MTH1W.
· I consulted with Guidance, my Math teacher and my family based on my final grade 9 math mark
· I learn best when math is more hands-on and applicable to every-day life
· I would like the option to take college or university-level math in grade 11 (MCF3M or MBF3C)
GRADE 10 ACADEMIC (MPM2D)
· I have a credit in grade 9 MTH1W.
· I like to be challenged to think critically to solve problems in abstract as well as concrete situations.
· I am willing to do at least 30 minutes of math homework every day.

GRADE 11
GRADE 11 MATH FOR EVERYDAY WORK AND LIFE (MEL3E)
· I have a credit in grade 9 applied math, grade 9 academic math, or grade 10 essentials math.
· I learn best when the topics deal with real everyday concepts that I need as an adult.
· I plan to go directly into the workplace, into an apprenticeship, or to college or university for a non-math-related program.
GRADE 11 FOUNDATIONS FOR COLLEGE MATH (MBF3C)
· I have a credit in grade 10 applied math or grade 10 academic math.
· I plan to go directly into the workplace or into an apprenticeship, or a college Math for a college program that requires Math, or a non-math related program.
· I would like more practice before taking courses leading to math-related programs at university.
GRADE 11 FUNCTIONS AND APPLICATIONS (MCF3M)
· I have a credit in grade 10 applied math or a credit in grade 10 academic math.
· I prefer hands-on learning to abstract reasoning.
· I plan to go directly into the workplace, an apprenticeship, to a college or to a university for a program that has a math prerequisite (colleges often take 3M or 4C; universities may ask for one Math - 3M leads to Data).
· I was very successful in Grade 10 applied, and want to take MDM4U (Data Management) in grade 12.
· I took grade 10 academic but know the jump to 3U is steep and want to ensure my success, and will take this course in Gr 11 semester 1, using this course to help prepare me for 3U in semester 2.
**NOTE: This is a commonly-used strategy to bridge the gap from 2D to 3U.
GRADE 11 FUNCTIONS (MCR3U)
· I have a credit in grade 10 academic math.
· I am willing to do at least 45 minutes of math homework every day.
· I plan to go directly into university for a program that has a math prerequisite. I will likely take more than one grade 12 math course.
**NOTE: The jump from 2D to 3U is very wide. A solid grasp of 2D is highly recommended if a student is going to take 3U directly after 2D. Speak to the 2D teacher for advice, if there is uncertainty about preparedness.

· I plan to go directly into the workplace or into an apprenticeship program after high school, or to go to college or university for a non-math related program.
GRADE 12 FOUNDATIONS FOR COLLEGE MATH (MAP4C)
· I have a credit in grade 11 Foundations for College (3C), grade 11 Functions and Applications (3M) or grade 11 Functions (3U).
· I plan to go to a workplace, apprenticeship, or college program that requires or would benefit from this course.
· I plan to go directly into university for a non-math related program, but want additional math learning.
GRADE 12 MATHEMATICS FOR DATA MANAGEMENT (MDM4U)
· I have a credit in grade 11 Functions and Applications (3M) or grade 11 Functions (3U).
