The overall purpose of the support class is to assist EAL students in successfully accessing and navigating the language requirements of the wider curriculum. The teacher may collaborate with other subject teachers to optimise support, so that students have the necessary communication tools to meet the intended learning in all of their subject areas.

Yes, all EAL students in grades 9 and 10 take EAP (English for Academic Purposes), two lessons of the 4 EAL lessons scheduled each week.

The focal texts and topics will come from different sources across the curriculum, along with other relevant stimulus pieces involving the four language skills. Students are also welcome to bring texts of many types for analysis or discussion. For example, a student might be reading a magazine or newspaper and wish to have some explanation or clarity. To support students who are demonstrating readiness to transition to English A, skills of literary and linguistic analysis and evaluation will also be taught.

The production and reception content of the EAL language acquisition classes - for example, specific grammar skills - will be brought into the support class where needed, but the primary purpose is to support students across the curriculum and be specific to their needs.
