Personal and Social Education

Personal and Social Education (PSE) is one of the five pillars of our Learning programme and through which we cover important developmental and wellbeing topics such as cultivating healthy relationships, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, personal identity and purpose, and healthy habits. The programme is designed to support students to adopt tools and skills to take responsibility for their own wellbeing.

In Grade 11, PSE will be conducted in a dedicated 75 minute block each fortnight led by dedicated PSE teachers, allowing students to engage in meaningful conversations and content as part of their PSE studies. Mentor time on the other hand focuses on relationship building between mentors and mentees, which includes 1-1 conversation and CAS advising so that each student feels secure and supported.

The PSE programme in the High School is carefully laid out to address topics that are important to students at this stage of their development. During the PSE lessons in Grade 11, we explore topics such as personal identity and purpose, as students concurrently learn about their options beyond their life beyond high school. Furthermore, students learn about and adopt skills to cultivate digital responsibility. Lastly, in line with the UWC mission, students explore and understand the richness of the College’s diversity, challenge stereotypes and adopt skills that promote inclusivity and belonging for all.

The mentor is central to the care of students and works with the Head of Grade to help students make the most of their time in High School. Furthermore, each student has a network of support. The network consists of, University Advising Counsellors, the High School counsellor in our Counselling and Wellbeing Centre, Learning and EAL Support, and our Designated Safeguarding Leads. Our Network of support is committed to care for each and every student based on their individual needs, and help each of them flourish in life.
