21st Century skills and ways for their development
21st Century skills and ways for their development
Have you ever thought about most essential skill that students should possess in the 21th century? Well, if you have not , then Professor Leikin would tell you her ideas about it. Professor Leikin is a women who specialises in Mathematics Education and she proposes that “creativity “ is the vital skill every student should have in the 21th century.
Professor Leikin’s idea is precise and accurate since the problem of students being unimaginative has been alarming for the Eastern countries and yet it is still ongoing. Under the ossified and spoon-feeding mode of Eastern education system, teachers and parents attach too much importance to students’ academic studies such as focusing on rote learning and exam-oriented skills rather than figuring how to pique students’ curiosity and motivation for learning. As a result, this education system is probably stifling our next generation’s creativity and their potential which is the last thing we want to see.
Of course, you may be wondering the importance of creativity and why students need it . For one thing, creativity is the key to learning. To cite an example, you can imagine yourself drawing on a white sheet to unleash your creativity. And in order to enhance your painting skills and perfect your painting , you may attend drawing classes in your spare time. Therefore, it is manifest that creativity motivates students to learn. When students are attracted to a creative goal, they will unconsciously be driven to acquire the skills they are not good at and it is called “learning motivation”, which is an important factor when we are learning new things.
For another, creativity is an indispensable skill in the workplace. It is public knowledge that companies tend to hire graduates that are more creative as their creativeness can bring business to move forward with fresh ideas and innovations such as new products or services, to name but a few. Besides, with the ability to think outside of the box, employees are more capable of dealing with plights and obstacles. More often than not, they can use their creativity to brainstorm unique and innovative solutions to tackle to difficulties while the ones with less creativity cannot. This characteristic can boost the team morale and smoothen the operation of businesses.
This is a wake up call for the Eastern countries. For the sake of our next generation, they should spare no efforts to reformulate the Eastern education system so as to wholly unleash students’ creativity for a better future. As an educator, I will also strive for the best and let this dream come true.
As we are in the 21st century, a society full of modern technology and civilization, the way of education should also change with the times. In Professor Roza’s presentation, I learned that cognition, strategic skills, knowledge, and creativity are indispensable elements in learning in today’s society.
In school, everyone is asked to work in groups, whether it’s a class presentation or a competitive activity, to exchange ideas with people who share the same or different views, and to grow together in a group.
For example, I enjoyed the sports games or group discussions in high school, where students with sufficient knowledge of sports would guide us on how to avoid injuries, run faster, and so on, or discuss interesting classical stories with students of different religions in geography class, all of which are precious memories and knowledge that I could not get when I was alone!
In our daily lives, we have more time to experience what we want to do and have the motivation to accomplish our dreams because we are in the happy 21st century, with all kinds of information at our fingertips through 3C products. But also because of this era of information explosion and everything available, innovation becomes an indispensable requirement for a person. For example, in the lecture, Professor Roza asked us to think of three ways to save water, and hopefully they are different. How to be innovative and find newer answers is the most important topic for us to think about now.
As a modern student, I am fortunate to have so many resources, and I would like to break away from the textbook system in Taiwan to make my school career more different. If I have the opportunity to be a teacher in the future, I will take what I have learned from today’s lecture and turn it into my teaching style to nurture the next generation of new stars in a new way!
Lastly, I would like to thank Professor Roza for her speech.
學生優良心得(二)
First, I am thankful for the chance to attend in this class. I really appreciate Professor Rosa for giving such useful speech, which benefits us to be a more competitive person in the 21st century.
‘Appreciate the diversities in your lives.’ This advice impressed me the most. Why do we need to appreciate diversities? At first, I was really confused about what she mentioned. Then I realized that we often come up with better ideas by combining different thoughts after brainstorming. It reminds me of being humble when facing different opinions instead of sticking to my point of view. She taught us to think differently and be flexible when discussing issues. So, in college courses I will endeavor to exchange ideas with my teammates, and I will learn more through these experiences. Peers in university is a good way to approach diversity. They come from different cities, families, and high schools; also, their backgrounds are completely distinguished from me.
Can you be friends that don’t agree with you?’ This is a tough question to me when I was in junior high school. I will be afraid when someone challenges my ideas especially when I am a group leader. But now, I learned that through discussions and debates we can solve conflicts and complete big tasks together and I can voice my opinions out loud confidently no matter what my role is. Moreover, I really enjoy the process of every discussion and felt a sense of achievement after solving the tasks.
At the end of the class a classmate asked a question about "How to develop creativity by ourselves? " Professor responded, "Pick a problem and solve it, think some way we didn’t think about before.” I am very excited that I tend to try settle problems every day instead of putting it aside. The wonderful thing is that I am already developing creativity. Thanks to Professor Rosa for giving this inspiring lecture.
