Who are mathematically gifted?
In the beginning of the professor’s speech, she mentioned what is gift, gift is a notable capacity, talent, or endowment. There are some mistaken beliefs:
**mathematical gift as an endowment then it determines mathematical development of individuals ‘naturally’ that is independently of the learning opportunities they receive
**Mathematical giftedness is linked to fixed theories of intelligence as opposed to “growth” theory of intelligence that connects intelligence with learning, effort, training, and practice.
**Dweck’s (2000) “theory of mindset” that contrasts between fixed mindset and growth mindset.
**“fixed mindset” implies genetic nature of mathematical giftedness.
Next, the professor mentioned that how do mathematic influence children? She talked about how school teachers teach math, and how students learn math. Teacher provides many mathematic games and problems to let children solve it. Also, the professor mentioned that there are special mathematics schools and special mathematics classes are offered in some area. There are some examples:
**Russian mathematics schools were supervised by research mathematicians and mathematical curricula in Russian mathematics schools were determined by the mathematicians' views on what should be learned and how. Kolmogorov’s schools
**In Hungary, mathematical curricula in specialized mathematics schools (or special mathematics classes) are based on psychologists' views on how mathematics should be taught to gifted students. The special mathematics classes are in the form of “tracks” within a larger school setting.
**In Bulgaria, which has a tradition of special education for students with high mathematical potential, most districts have a school devoted especially to mathematics and natural sciences
Who can be a good teacher of mathematically gifted students?
The professor mentioned that as long as you have passion and you are gifted to teach them, you can be their teacher. You must be creativity and be patient. Being a math teacher shouldn’t always be angry with students. At the end of the speech, she conclude some concepts that today taught: Explicit expression of love of mathematics and sense of humor allows overcoming difficulties in a positive atmosphere and joyful learning that advances students' sense of humor and kindness.

According to today’s speaker, learning more than one language is essential. I totally agree with his opinion because I think languages are the important parts of interacting with people whose cultural backgrounds are different from mine. By learning lot of languages, I can communicate with as many foreigners as I can, and I can learn their culture or thoughts more easily. As a result, learning more than one language enable me to broaden my horizons and expand my experiences. According to the speaker, learning a language give us more alternatives in thinking, in understanding, in framing and shaping our own world view, also, it enables us to move into another world of experiences and therefore allows us more opportunities.
That is to say, with the ability of communicating with foreigners from different countries, I will get more opportunities to go abroad or have the chance to interact with them to gain more special experiences. The speaker mentions that we should be aware of the diversity in thoughts, in perspectives and in decision making. I think it’s very important because we have to embrace perspectives from different sides which enable us to think more and make the best decision. That is to say, we have to take every side of opinion and advise to lead us to the correct result.
The other thing we have to be aware of is the changing demands and requirements in different jobs at different time. I totally agree to this opinion because I think we have to pay attention to the surroundings in order to make adjustments according to the changes in our life. By doing so, there will be more time for us to prepare for or even deal with the massive changes in our life, and we won’t have to rush to adapt to the new challenges or environment. I really appreciate today’s speaker, I think he talks about some important points in the speech, and I will learn more languages and try to be aware of those he mentions today from now on.

Today we invited Dr. Luo, Hou-Hui from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, to talk about the importance of English education. This professor surely is a funny one. When the webcam went live, first thing to hit me was the blue sea, shining sand and a palm tree blowing in the wind. And in front of that stands an old man greeting us. It’s ridiculous that I was really convinced that the lecturer was giving us speech when going on a vacation. Back to the lecture, it mainly focused on English education, and the professor spoke both from the perspective of the students and the teachers. He also mentioned a few things he observed from his own experience.
Though this lecturer spoke not as clearly as the professor last time (I sincerely apologize to her for mistaking her name for today’s lecturer’s). But he spoke slower and use much more simple words during the lecture. Such act not only makes us catch his points more easily, but also works as a reminder of the way of giving presentations: use simple words to make your audience understand. One thing worth mentioning is that this time the lecturer did a better job controlling the number of words put in the slideshow. One story I remember from his speech is the noisy student one. Sometimes, teachers would scold their students for being too loud during the class, even if he was discussing things around the subject. I had that experience, too. I was humiliated for discussing the group project too loudly back in junior high. It was a painful experience because I don’t think my act deserved a scolding that harsh. The situation went so bad that after that no one wanted to continue the conversation anymore.
In conclusion, the lecturer warned us about some potential pitfalls we may encounter on the path of being a teacher. He also brought up the duty of teachers is not just teaching the content on the textbook and giving some test papers. We must keep learning, but not just read a lot of books, instead, you should learn how to use the knowledge you absorb.
