《What it takes to thrive in the era of GLOBALIZATION》
Bachir Bastien
In the beginning, Bachir Bastien asked everyone to ponder what comes to their mind toward the question, and kept it to themselves. Based on the definition of “Globalization” from Cambridge dictionary, it refers to “the development of closer economic, cultural, and political relations among all the countries of the world as a result of travel and communication becoming easy.” Bachir Bastien emphasized that it could include lots of aspects. He then mentioned about the key benefits we could gain if we gain a more understanding toward global things. For instance, we could obtain the ability to lead effectively, become better communicator, or even increase our Cultural Quotient, which makes our own a well-rounded person.
Later, Bachir Bastien shared his experiences on how he has learned when he first came to Taiwan, and changed his attitudes. There are four things which are really vital, and thus we should always bear in mind. First one, it’s acceptance and avoid judging people. Everyone is different, and when we are in the place where people can’t see us, or either way, that’s OK. Life becomes easier when we avoid those stereotypes and not to be so judgmental.
Second one, it’s empathy. It means see people with colorless, and try to stand on the different angle to look at the world. We are either part of the solutions or part of the problems. Empathy help us with better relationship with other people. Third one, it’s curiosity. Bachir Bastien presented a picture of Albert Einstein with a silly face to remind of the sense of curiosity. He mentioned that his experiences trying Taiwanese local food. He was not willing to try anything such as stinky tofu and pig blood cake at first, yet, not until his trying did he realize the importance of being open and curious to new things.
The last one, it’s be principled and know your value. When we know our own values, we could both have fun with our friends and be ourselves. He mentioned his experiences in LA where weeds are legal and friends invited him to give that a try, he refused. When we know our rules and what we stand for, we keep our identity, and deep down this is what we are.
It is the generation of globalization now and I think it is important to know how to adapt ourselves to this situation. There are many skills that we need to make ourselves a more valuable, special and unique person. Because of globalization, pressure of competition increases faster and faster, we have to strengthen ourselves to find out what is our superiority. It is also vital to adjust our attitude toward it.
There are so many different people around the world. Each of them has their own characteristics, strength and weakness. As the result, it is so essential that people have empathy. We should try our best to realize what others’ opinions even though we don’t accept his or her perspective. Because all of us have our own growing experience like we meet various people and face different things. There are also many factors that influence people on their thinking like gender, culture, race or even their socioeconomic status. The speaker mentions in his speech that it is better to avoid judging other people. I think it is true because it is easy to criticize other persons, but it is hard to understand what they really mean and why they will have this kind of thoughts.
I like a sentence in this presentation very much: be principle and know your value. When growing older and older, I was more likely to forget my dream and be less confident of myself. However, I know it is incorrect, everyone must have their own distinguishing features. Rather than being depressed and unconfident all the time, trying various things and participating in many activities can give us more opportunity to learn new about ourselves. When we know more about ourselves, it is easier to know what our own values are.
Thanks to Mr. Bastien that I could know the definition of the globalization and learn what attitude we should use to face the globalization. Giving respect to others and try to accept their culture is important so that we can discover how colorful the cultures in the world. If we can be curious and do our best to realize a culture which different from ours, we may learn something important and expand our view.
MY father usually needs to receive visitors form many countries, sometimes I go with him and help him. Though I think my English is very bad, but I still summon my courage and try to communicate with hem, and those people are patient and even slow down his speed to talk with me. After chatting with them, I have learned not only their habit but also their culture. The Indian bring us to Indian restaurant and introduce the spices that the aid into dishes, and he recommend some books and movie to us so we can realize their culture more. The Italian likes to take picture and he showed us many pictures he took when he traveled the world, and he also shared some tips to surf. The Chinese is a Buddhist and he told us the story of Buddha. From getting along with them, I think I am fortunate to know their culture more.
I think Mr. Bastien is incredible that you have learned a lot of languages form Many Countries, hope I can learn so many languages and travel the world to make my view of Global more vast.
I like the theme this week. It is the time we should care about our CQ. I still remember that the first time I went to Japan, and I was 12.My parents took me to the sashimi restaurant, every things were good except one that I do not eat raw food. Although I was afraid of eating sashimi, I still gave it a try. After I tried my first sashimi that I found that sashimi was not that bad. I think the first step to earn CQ is giving yourself a chance to try different things in different cultures. To experience new things can enable you to get more close to the different cultures. I think we should accept the different culture instead of judging them. Most of people in Taiwan are curious to foreigner, especially those who have different skin color. Because most of the people live in Taiwan are Asian so when the people see black people or white people, they stare at those foreigners. When I was 5, I studied in kindergarten, and half of my teachers are not Taiwanese. They came from Russia, South Africa, Mexico, United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Spain. So, it was regular to see black people in the kindergarten. I remember that the teacher who came from South Africa brought us some elephant jerky, and I ate a slice of elephant jerky. It taste like pork but more rough and sour. That was a fun experience to me to eat elephant meat. Mr. Bastien said that to be principled and know our value are very important. I agree with that idea because once my ex-boyfriend wanted to have sex with me when I was 16 but I finally refused because I told myself do not have sex with other people before I get marriage. If I pregnant at that time, I can not take responsibility for a kid. Although I still can not find my value now but I will keep trying in the rest of my life.
