First of all, Turner went through a brief introduction about himself, his area of research in STEAM Education and how it influenced the 21 st century competences. Moreover, he’d like to share his view on why the Singapore government insisted on the intense STEAM Education and how it helped build skills that students acquired.
Tinker academy, as a friend of Turner, works with Turner in the same project.Later on, they would like to share aspects of why they wanted to bring STEAM education to Singapore schools. The whole project was divided into three areas, the first area focused on the use of gadgets like microbit and the way to teach teachers how to use these tools. The second area was about how teachers and also students could do in schools. The third area mentioned about how they actually customized it in different subjects.
To start with, Turner talked about some background knowledge about Singapore. This country relies heavily on import, as a result, that’s one of the reasons they regard human as their resource. Also, there is a wide variety of food in this country, and most of all, they follow the England education system, which means student from all streams could still have chances to try to progress back up in the last step through the highly competitive tests. However, this kind of test-oriented education system did really do harm to students’ mental health and the whole society. As a consequence, it’s time to change, for the country and for the 21 st century skills.
Instead of exam-oriented curriculum, 21 st century skills emphasizes more on the core values students need to acquire through tasks, including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making and relationship management skills during the process of learning. Take STEAM curriculum for example. It helps student learn for the sake of learning. Take a look at the pictures Tuner showed on power point, we found students engaged during the tasks. Kids were not just programing or making robots, they actually integrated comprehensive abilities to make a project altogether.
Most important of all, children think, create, code, and engineer in the projects. The change in Singapore Education system makes them become a self-learner.
