Math Matters @ SGDSB is Currently Under Construction to be updated yet still has many valuable resources to check out!
The activities and tasks that follow are intended to lend support to educators and school boards as they seek out meaningful ways to implement social and emotional learning skills into their mathematics programs AND ALL OTHER ASPECTS OF THE CURRICULUM. While at first glance, they may not present as ‘traditional math activities’, they are nonetheless explicitly connected to the SEL skills identified in Strand A of the Ontario 2020 Math Curriculum, listed above. The activities are intended to nurture the Third Path conditions as educators and students develop and nurture relationships throughout the year, not simply as September ‘getting-to-know-you activities AND LEND THEMSELVES TO TEACHING AND LEARNING IN ALL CURRICULAR AREAS. They are not ‘math specific’, but are organized around the SEL skills in the 2020 Math Curriculum.
Math happens all around us, all day everyday. Embedding such activities directly into learning helps educators to blur the lines between ‘math’ instruction and other curriculum areas, while simultaneously supporting students’ healthy growth, academic achievement, and over-all well-being. Finally, I recognize that the use of such activities is not ‘new’ to most of us. On the contrary, great teachers have nurtured social and emotional learning as a foundation of setting the stage for nurturing students’ well-being and optimal academic achievement.
NOTE: Some of the activities provided herein have been extracted, borrowed or adapted from activities the author has used over time. Where possible, citations have been provided to credit published webpages and/or print resources.
The activities in the sub-pages below are organized by division (PRIMARY, JUNIOR, and INTERMEDIATE/SENIOR) and around the 6 SEL skills identified in the 2020 Curriculum document.
