Effective Math Instruction

The image to the left has been adapted from Adding it Up (NRC, 2001) shows that each of the elements of mathematical literacy are interwoven to reach the goal of being mathematically literate. While conceptual and procedural understanding of any concept are essential, they are not sufficient. Being mathematically proficient encompasses all five elements of mathematical literacy. It is the relationships and links between them that underpin mathematical proficiency.

Knowing mathematics does not easily translate to knowing how to teach mathematics.
