Focusing on Fundamentals

Our goals of the Renewed Math Strategy LIVE INSIDE of our Board Learning Plan:

  • CONDITIONS FOR LEARNING
  • FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES (in the ENVIRONMENT as well as LEARNER MINDSET)
  • ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING
  • LEADERSHIP

These all exist within the work we are engaging in as we foster effective communication in mathematics.

What is the Renewed Math Strategy? (RMS)

Building on the goals in Achieving Excellence: A Renewed Vision for Education in Ontario, our Ministry of Education is committed to helping students gain the math knowledge and skills they will need for the future.

The Renewed Math Strategy takes the latest research along with what we have learned from our successful journey to improve literacy achievement and applies that knowledge to support better outcomes in mathematics.

Support for schools focuses on professional learning opportunities connected to student learning and well-being that leverage the big and/or highly effective ideas from key foundational mathematical documents and resources that will support teachers in planning for a balanced approach to learning and teaching that will allow students to learn with understanding, develop proficiency, learn mathematical ways of thinking and an appreciation for how mathematics is used in everyday life.

The following are the four key objectives of the Renewed Mathematics Strategy:

  1. increased student achievement, well-being and engagement in mathematics;
  2. increased educator math knowledge and pedagogical expertise;
  3. increased leader use of knowledge of effective mathematics pedagogy to provide the necessary supports and conditions for school and system improvement;
  4. increased parent engagement in their children’s mathematics learning.

There is a website set up specifically with resources that support the RMS. Within the site, there are great virtual learning sessions through the On Demand and Adobe Connect Session Recordings to support professional learning across districts.
